Mathys Tel

I like him, but he needs to find end product. That’s the problem with too many of our forwards. Odobert is the same and having them both play last night it became painful as both worked hard, both ran well with the ball and then nothing.
He's 19, the 'end product' bit is usually the last piece to come together and if he had that now there is zero chance he would be here. The most important thing at this stage is that he has all the physical attributes and in addition looks literally physically strong. Yes we would be overpaying at the price quoted and betting on his potential, but I wouldn't mind taking the gamble tbh ( I do think its likely we try and negotiate down the price a bit though)....

We’re still lacking an inverted player from the right (assuming Deki stays central). Odobert is right footed but does look 2 footed - although he defo favours the right side and cross, as opposed to cut inside and shoot on his left.

A better bet than signing Tel on the left would be someone like Bowen or Mbuemo on the right. Then Odobert can move to the left and cut in. I watched a lot of Odobert at Burnley and he’s defo more comfortable on the left. And we also have Son and Moore there.

I’ve been impressed with Tel lately but wouldn’t be looking to spend £50/55 mil in a position we have bodies.

I’d try to get to a point where we had:

Right side
First choice - Bowen or Mbuemo
Back up - Johnson/Deki

Left side
First choice - Odobert
Back up - Son/Moore

Although Moore doesn’t really look ready yet.

A lot will depend if we qualify for CL. Suspect if we don’t we will make do with what we have.

Id like to think regardless of CL we can sign whoever we want. West Ham signed Kudos, Wolves signed Cunha, Brentford signed Mbuemo. We just dont seem to spend the right money on unearthing that next talent. We wait until the likes of West Ham, Wolves, Brentford sign these players at fees we can most certainly afford (30m to 40m range) but end up spending £60m on the likes of Richarlison and Solanke, who are just not the players we should have been spending that money on. It makes no financial sense. We then get priced out of the likes of Mbuemo, Kudos and Cunha and those teams dont want to really sell to a direct rival, but will to the powerhouses like City, Liverpool, Arsenal. Wages certainly help too as we are too tight with those as well.

We waste an awful lot of money, and its not saying other clubs dont, but can you name any decent players of ours recently that other premier league teams would want to sign? Can only hear rumours of City circling around Bergval, and rightly so. Our hit rate is shocking.

We've signed some really good youngsters recently, so I'd say we are spending the right money on the next talent (Gray, Bergvall, Vuskovic... ). We're not going to be able to sign every youngster with potential. There still needs to be a mix of some older heads in there as well.

Completely agree. I don’t know the recruitment setup but certainly our big money signings have been poor.

I’d much rather take a chance on 2 x 30m players instead of 1 x 60m. Thats where we’ve had our joy in the market and they have a larger upside.

I think the answer is both (Tel will be 45M)

LW
- Tel/Wilson (let them fight for starting position)
- Son as backup, Moore on loan (no point him getting 5 or 10 games, look at Donley, Keeley, Vuskovich playing every game on loan)
Son phases out by end of next season, you could bring back Moore then

RW
- Buy one of Bowen or Mbuemo
- Have Johnson be backup, fight for first choice

Deki for me should not play outside again unless it's an injury crisis.

We need to add to squad, not swap depth on one side to the other.

I agree with the principle but we have tons of depth on the left (not necessarily quality but that's another debate) and none on the right.

For the left we potentially have Son, Odobert, Moore, Solomon and Gil without even adding Tel. Now of course some of them might go but with a new coach likely in the summer who knows what they might think of the existing options and whom they might give another chance too.

Conversely on the right we have Johnson, Odobert who can do a job but looks better suited to left and Kulu who should never really play on the right anymore. So 0 depth. If our finances are going to be tight in terms of what we can bring in it would make the most sense to prioritise a starter for the right rather than more yet more depth for the left.

We also have Yang for the right. Not sure he's ready though. It's very unlikely that Solomon and Gil will be here next season.

Ryan Cherki
Available and an absolutely brilliant player
Yep he will frustrate some coaches but that’s where they earn their money

Mbuemo has taken time to blossom
Cunha cost wolves a huge amount of money at £44m
Kudos no one gambled on. Was odd it this hear you can hear the West Ham fans talk about his “attitude”
I agree with your sentiment but think your examples are maybe not the right ones
And don’t forget those players when sold are going for Solanke money. United are rumoured to be offering cunha £250k a week. They never learn. He would join them on half that and be ecstatic

Age and experience matters, new Country, club and system and playing in a struggling team something he hasn't experienced at Munich.

I think he would be a very good signing, and for a few million more than Johnson, I think he would be worth it. He can play across the front three, has pace and takes a man on, something we are desperate for.

Werner going at the end of the season and the need for Son to be replaced we need to look ahead and not to half a dozen games or so from Tel.

glad to see tel take more risks. he's got the tools to do it and he is demonstrating it.
i hope he signs with us. of course the cheaper the better but i rate him as much as bergvall and grey

watch his goals at at bayern

he is double footed, good turn of pace, dribbles and has great positioning

Mbuemo is a great shout, he's fast, powerful and has huge self belief. We need a bit more of that in our team.

Let's not forget....HE might not be interested. We could have no Europe to offer, plus a new manager he doesn't even know yet.

I hope he is interested. I have an instinct that Tel will be a fantastic long term signing. I think he is one of those that will always be involved in the key match situations. He'll always score and assist unlike some of these players, even though he will fluff his lines as well.

Reminds me a bit of Richi. Always involved in goals and assists.
