I heard an interesting opinion the other day on how far Russia is willing to go in Belarus, the Ukraine, and indeed fudging with the US elections. The perceived wisdom is that he is going all in as Trump's re-election is in doubt i.e. a shopping trolley dash of power and land grabs, murders, and all the other heinous brick.
But the opposite opinion is that he might actually rein things in a little or at least park the worst of them for now until the election. His fear is Biden being president of course and the range of sanctions the US could employ. To date the sanctions have mostly been leveled at various oligarchs directly, but sector-wide sanctions would cripple an already weak Russian economy and maybe force the people onto the street in huge numbers.
