It sounds like you press a button and, using special nano-hydraulics, the coloured features on the ball are raised up three inches from the surface, making a Gerry Anderson "motor-assisted hydraulics working" noise. Then, special chromophores in those surfaces are activated and they change colour, just before they proceed to recess again.
Or they might just print them different colours, I don't know.
