A friend of ours here, Stephen Altman, raised the excellent point of how when BAE went in with that silly stud-up challenge on Zabaletta, rather than make a meal and get Benny the red he actually 'might' have deserved, he very quickly exchanged a small arm around the shoulder and did his absolute best not to get a fellow pro sent-off. Rare is the moment. I've always liked him as a player, and have to say, having not really thought about it much at the time, in hindsight it was a very decent piece of behaviour which is all too rare. That's all really...
 
Indeed but isn't it a sad state of affairs when a tackle like that should be a red card? It's not Spurs' tinted specs either, it was a good solid challenge - the type I use to make in my day :D

They really do need to review tackling, it's has become a joke.

I think Zabaletta is one of the very few City players who has performed as well or even better than he did last season.

There are many reasons why City didn't maintain their Title, but he isn't one of them.
 
I think any serious defender would admire what a fantastic tackle it was.

It shouldn't even have been a foul - tackles should be judged by the outcome, not the method.

Agree with the general sentiment about Zabaletta.

The ends don't justify the means though. If you barrel in two footed and the opposing player has to jump out of the way to avoid you injuring him, the outcome will be you getting the ball and nothing of the player. However you have done it dangerously, which means you should receive punishment.
 
But showing your studs isn't necessarily malicious.

You can go in with your shins and still cause problems.
 
There was an incident in the first half where the ball was kicked into the east stand about halfway, and as it got thrown down it hit a young lad on the back of the head. Zabaleta before taking the thrown in put his thumbs up and tapped the lad on the head to check he was alright. Was nice to see, and like what has been said already he seems a top bloke (and a very good player!)
 
I've said it before, but it is worth repeating: he is one of the only City players I can stand. He's a fantastic right-back, probably the best in the league, and he's a great professional to boot. Him, Kompany, Aguero and Silva are probably the only City players I can feel a certain affection for.

What he did for BAE only reaffirms my belief that the game needs more pros like Zabaleta. You also get the feeling that he'd be one of the few City players who would genuinely consider staying at the club if the money ran dry and all his fellow super-stars were sold.

Now watch as City replace him with a super-expensive flashy right-back because he does more stepovers than Zabaleta does. ;)
 
Did anyone hear Gary Neville when he went in. ' Ohhh Lovely' was his reaction to the tackle. Hilarious.
 
You can argue whether those type of challenges should be red cards or not, but fact is they are at the moment and BAE knows this and does these type of lunges with studs showing too frequently and needs to cut it out....

20 years ago we wouldn't even be thinking of it as a bad challenge. It's exactly the type of challenge I would receive and make an absolute meal of on the pitch in recent times though! Luckily I'm a keeper first and foremost and for some reason we have this rep of being a bit loopy, so I don't get on the end of challenges like that often.
