Youth Players/On-Loan Thread 2020/21

Our best production of youth came with loans, Townsend, Mason, Kane, even Kyle Walker and Danny Rose - That's one thing, I think, Poch did wrong, was keeping the youth bolt holed up at Hotspur Way. You can only learn so much training with the 1st team, minutes on the pitch is where it counts. Wonder if we could have moulded a few more academy products under Poch's tenure if we had retained the loan system?
I think you can find a lot of examples in both directions
Yeah, could be wrong but I don't recall the likes of Hoddle, Perryman, Hazard, Falco, Barmby, Carr, King and that bloke who joined Arse on a Bosman ever going out on loan.

Not too many successes in the modern era though. So maybe Winks and Tanganga are the exceptions that prove the rule?

Back in the day we had the Reserves which was a route through for up and coming players, getting experience playing alongside first team players either not making a matchday squad or playing their way back to match fitness after an injury.
In my memory at least the Reserve games/leagues were pretty competitive. There's no longer anything equivalent to that.

I agree completly, the reserve games were a very good stepping stone to the first team for youngster. They played with and more importantly played against experienced players and got to realise what would be expected in the future instead of being matched against players with the same lack of experience. The really exceptional talent will manage to get through the existing system but far many who have as much talent as the average foreign important will not. I remember watching a football combination game where we had Ron Henry, Mel Hopkins, Bobby Smith and TerryMedwin all internationals along with John Smith and Tony Marchi both under 23 internationals, that was in the day when there weren't over 12 internationals a year or substitutes and it was a lot harder to win a cap.

And I was wondering if Alfie Devine was still 'flavour of the month'

Also, how are the likes of Luke Amos and Bennetts doing since they left Spurs?

Bennetts not much at all, same with Griffiths at Lyon. Leaving did not do them much good.

Fair question on Devine. I noticed at the weekend that he didnt play for the U-18s though, so perhaps he might be injured?

Would be a surprise if he suddenly dropped in profile since the marine game

I read that Devine is not eligible for Europa League.

It is amazing how the Europa League does allow you to bring through your young players. I can remember Harry Redknapp using it to give quite a few young players their first taste of action in the senior team and now Jose is doing the same.

I have been impressed at quite a lot of the young players coming through at Arsenal over the last year or two and I think they have been able to do that there because they've been in the second rate competition for a few years, allowing them to bring quite a few through.

Perhaps our lack of CL football this year (and in all likelihood next year) could have a silver lining in us bringing through our next crop of talented, young players (although we're probably only 50-50 to qualify for the Europa again next year right now).

Harry Kane benefited from us being in the Europa league don't forget!

Said it in the Skipp thread ..

The fact that Skipp this year will play more competitive games in a single season that Winks has ever played (being 5 years older and never loaned out) shows the flaw in having player in/around the squad if they aren't damn close to automatic starters.

Players between 19-23 need competitive game time more than anything else, unless you are like Dele and own the first team spot early, a loan will almost always be the better route.

The trick is finding a good loan move, and that is probably where we have improved recently.

Bennetts is playing on loan in league 1 with Ipswich same team as Parrott today.
