Yet another laptop thread

Apparently Asus (not Acer) and then Toshiba are the most reliable laptops according to some company what does warranties to businesses. Someone posted a link to their findings on the old board.

EDIT: May have been Square Trade.

DHSF, my fight offer still stands. Throw the chicken leg, you big gay bear!

Mate I have been rowing everyday this week and have lost 2kgs. No KFC for me - although I fudgein miss it.

So give it until the end of the season where I will be more than happy to introduce you to my fist and to the sole of my shoe.

I'll mainly be watching it for email, work, watching stuff online and browsing mate but will occasionally want to whip out a total war game. I'm definitely going to get a tablet soon but I'd quite like to get a laptop too.

If there is a machine which looks good, does simple processes like word and browsing very well, has good battery life and is quiet, I would take that over a machine which runs out of battery in one and a half hours and plays these games relatively well, if they're the same price.

Does that make sense or am I talking babble?

To be honest mate, for those sorts of needs, I'd take myself to PC World or Currys and have a look around. They'll have loads of machines in your price bracket and it is a lot down to preference as you're not going to be hammering it. You can't go wrong with Toshiba, Samsung, Vaio or Asus imo. Anything in the ?ú600 bracket should be more than fine to play all the old C&C and Total War games and most new strategy games too.

Top tip with electricals, once you've decided on a model, take yourself to a John Lewis and see if they have the same. They'll price match any major high street chain and give a much better store guarentee.

Take a look at this review page, some of these machines should be in your price range by now:

The Asus at the bottom of that list has 10 hours battery life...

I got my laptop from here,

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/

Was about ?ú500 three years ago and got a decent gaming laptop with a Blu-ray drive. Was an acer and never had any problems with it. Delivery was excellent so i would vouch for the site, you get some really good deals and they do trade in on some laptops.

The key thing to do is google reviews for the components (graphics card e.t.c.) and then you can see what you're getting

So something like this? Doubt that would play even rome total war but looks like its light, relatively good battery life and would seem to do a lot of what I want it to do for a reasonable price.

Can't see if the drive is SSD or HDD though, I'm guessing HDD? Thanks for advice mate, helpful stuff.

Key Features:
- 13.3in screen in 12in chassis (TN glossy 1,366 x 768 )
- Up to Core i7, 4GB RAM and 256GB SSD
- Beautifully built, durable chassis
- Aluminium, magnesium-allow, carbon-fibre and soft-touch
- Backlit keyboard, LED battery indicator

Agree about their work range (Dell) being good/reliable in the price range, though HP are better (cheaper and otherwise equal).

In home terms, I had the 5150 that Wookie said about, it was a stinker, had other friends buy them and had part failures, though most other brands have the same issues, now I always wait until the next generation is out so I can get the 'nearly new' cheap and know better what is good.

I'm liking this, if I could part with a grand I'd have one;

Think I'll just stick to my free work laptops though, until a good next gen tablet arrives (if my misses ever gets a job!).

You'd be fine for Total War Rome on that, it's at the top end of requirements, though it won't be so hot for newer titles. Only 2x USB 2.0 as well, which is a bit mean. Though it's light as a feather and goods battery, like you say. It's HDD.

Take a look on the VAIO website, they are doing half price SSD and free graphics upgrades until 30th April, you can get a better spec than the Acer for same money

Bought a Asus N53 X5MS in the end, nice full hd screen and 2 year warranty for just over €700. All good at the moment, Windows 7 is taking a bit of getting used to coming from a mac and xp, it??s all a bit arse about face. Thanks for the input

A quick question is it normal for Windows 7 to take up around 20 gb of space on the hard drive? Seems rather excessive to say the least anyone tried to stream line the OS before?
