So a question for you guys who remember Gough playing for us;
Just how close was that late 80's team to real greatness? I first started following regularly in 87-88, so am not really in a position to comment with much authority. Simplifying things though (and leaving aside the details of why certain things happened), if we'd managed to retain Gough and Chris Waddle, to shortly thereafter link up with likes of Gascoigne and Lineker (I know Gascoigne & Waddle overlapped for a season), we'd have won the league wouldn't we...? Is that a realistic assessment, again speaking hypothetically from a purely footballing perspective and leaving aside financial and other issues of the day?
