It was a real shame to lose him so soon after signing him, was for personal reasons by all accounts. Him and Mabbutt were a great pairing in that 87 team.Just very slightly before my time (one season or so). I heard he was very highly rated though. Him leaving sounded like one of those happenings, similar to Waddle being sold, that stopped that late 80's team from really kicking on.

Yeah I did wonder this, a way of circumnavigating a direct sale to a rival in the same league. A much better deal for Rangers if true than the one we openly did get Fryers! He was a fantastic player. By all accounts when we bought him it was on the understanding that he would move to Rangers after a season or so. Thus it was never going to be a long term arrangement. Shame.
Fantastic player, best centre half we had since Mike England, real athlete, hard as nails and bags of skill.

Found this when checking his reasons for leaving..

And he makes Pleaty’s all time x1! (As do a few from that 87 side!

I agree, he also enabled Mabbutt to have ( what i consider) his best season in a Spurs shirt.
For us older brethren
My first season going by myself to the Lane....the shelf still there in all its Glory.I just can’t get my head around that season being 30 years ago.
Mabbsy did have great season but alas provided the moment that archived that song away. When Gough goes up, to lift the FA Cup...
Huh? He looks great for 56fudge me he has not aged well, is he ill?
