Last time we were ruthless in finishing chances was under AVB in 2012/13 when we used to send the opposition to sleep with our sideways passing before Bale would score a 30 yard screamer with our first shot every game.
We were actually ruthless at the start of his final season too, post Bale. A lot of close games tipped our way because we ruthlessly took chances in games. That was unsustainable though.
For me trying to beat opponents primarily by being ruthless in front of goal is just about always going to be unsustainable because there aren't good enough strikers around to get that kind of an edge. You need to also be better at creating chances and stop the opponents from creating chances. Then the luck and variance of finishing those chances will kick in and results will vary. But overall there's a better chance of actually winning.
Of course better finishing helps too, but there aren't many teams around that are ruthless with any kind of consistency. Leicester were last season, but I genuinely believe that was more luck than a lot of other people. And their results so far this season clearly indicates that last season was a considerable statistical outlier rather than some master plan coming together.
