I'm not one for a lot of the serious and non fiction books that are mentioned on here, each to their own and all that, but i do read a fair bit.
Recently been reading the rumpole of the Bailey books for light relief in amongst some john wyndham, but mainly neville shute.
Really like his stuff, very simply written, poignant, good characters and usually a "message", although not hammered into you.
Being mostly from the 40s and 50s some of the language is iffy and may put some people off, which is a shame because the tone is not what it may seem.
Just finished chequer board, despite a slow start i loved it, couldn't put it down towards the end.
