Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

Has he had a cough ever since he joined Spurs?

Watched the post match where he delicately dismantled leading question about whether VAR "helped us" and tbf the guy does stick to his principles on the usage of VAR, refs and traditions of the game. I'm not sure if I entirely agree with his stances but at least he's consistent.

This might come off a little brexit-y but it is nice having a manager with a very strong grasp of English and a direct way of speaking. With Poch and Conte it was infuriating to listen to because speech was always riddled with easily fixable mistakes, I do think nobody has the balls to tell them because of their stature / aura but it was a pet peeve. You'd think these guys would be perfectionists in all manners rather than just having a mediocre handle on the local language.

But did Ange always have the voice / cough thing, I can't remember if he did at Celtic. It's the same pre match so I don't think it's due to yelling through the game. Hope there's not a health issue there but he's always on the verge of having to clear his throat.

I found it funny in a complaint about someone’s English you manage to make a big mistake yourself 😃 not intended as a dig.

As for their acceptance of poor English, it’s hard. I don’t know if you speak a second language, but I speak Japanese and although I would love it to be perfect sometimes it’s just not that easy. I’m always extremely impressed when someone is confident to speak publicly in their second language. It’s very difficult for many reasons.

However, I do agree with you that having a native English speaker as coach is nice (for lack of a better word.)

I'm not sure if it's just a public speaking habit (hesitate to use the word nervous here as not his personality), but seems to be more of a tic/tell than a cold? (to your point, someone would have to look at his old interviews), or it's long Covid brick ..

I do miss a lot of words in writing but that's a combination of self inflicted cognitive damage as well as fighting with auto correct on phones... What was the big mistake, that I left the word "that" out? I'm always happy to be corrected but I can't spot it, to me that's just lazy rather than a clear error!

Yeah I'm fluent in French as I worked over there for a while, Spanish to a certain extent as I learned whilst planning to travel to South America. Writing wasn't my forte in either of those but like in English I often make mistakes out of a lack of focus / missing words I thought I'd written.

Iirc you have done work teaching English, I have too and as we teachers are trained to listen out for things to work on, obviously both Poch and Antonio have the fluency + confidence to speak but the accuracy is way off. Even to get to that level it is impressive as you say, but it seems a shame not to tighten up the improvable aspects. I have an inkling that because these guys can be intimidating people don't feel comfortable pointing out areas to improve...

On Ange it just seems like he's waiting to pop off to go and properly clear his throat but has been told he can't so is just constantly staving off a coughing fit. I appreciate this is rather trivial but it's something I've noticed throughout his time here. I guess you followed him more than I did when he was up in Scotland so I wonder if it was the same then.

Ange is literally the first coach we've had who seems to actually see the holes their squad has and wants to address them. I'm really not comfortable with this. I'm used to the coach lying to themselves about how strong the squad is and then failing because they don't have the components they need. Or them just being blind to obvious holes. Ange isn't like that.

Me no likey. 🤣
Since Mopo we had nuno, who was never going to moan about anything and 2 managers who were seen as toxic, they knew they could not come in saying the squad is rubbish, or the fans/media would be all over them straight away.

It’s a delay method too IMO
He coughs and gruffs which gives him an extra few seconds to think before speaking
Just my opinion

If I could ask him one question...it would be about the cough.

On the football side everything appears to be in order so why ask him anything about that.

Some people have a nervous cough but I don't think for one minute that he's nervous in interviews or doing pressers.

We have plenty of medical people at the club and no doubt connections with a host of specialists so one would assume if there was an issue it would be dealt with?

I won't lie, it is concerning.

I think it's almost certainly a nervous cough.

He's dying of cancer! Comon we're spurs fans. We need drama.

Who cares about the reality or the person. Lets build this up and then act like the victims.

I believe most of us make many mistakes when writing on here on basic grammar or punctuation as well as the age old problem of losing focus. These are mostly reaction post and rarely deeply considered messages. I lose count on the number of times I start writing something and veer off subject.

It's covid, jeez, ease up lads.

I just think he needs a bit of sun. A week in Morocco with the lads should do the trick.

Not sure about the cough (I haven't noticed it recently) but it's probably just a continuation of some of the tics he has when speaking publicly. The short, sharp breath in and rarely looking at the person talking to him are the noticeable ones. Those have been there for a long time:

In press conferences like that it's hard to imagine him being this amazing motivational speaker, but they also only seem to come out when he doesn't really want to be there, perhaps when he's speaking to someone he doesn't know. Contrast them to interviews with people he likes, in comfortable environments and it's completely different:

We had one coach dying from cancer last year, and a manager hospitalised after some pretty major surgery, so there is presedence here.

I mean; something has got to derail the positive development at the club, since injuries and suspentions doesn't seem to work as well as one might think.

Glad he actually said something re the Dunk challenge (he was pushed on VAR again)

Didn't look happy post match, I'm sure the team got an earful despite him publicly protecting them
