VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

Why does the on field ref need to make all decisions? Why can he not be the mouthpiece of a refereeing unit?

The linesman now have the ability to tell him of things going on, why not a 3rd party with the advantage of all the angles and replays?

Its archaic, IMO, to expect one person to keep up with everything, be aware of everything, run it all himself...

Its a team sport, why not a team of officials too? They are all qualified ref, if the man in the ear says pen then its a pen, move on...

Currently referees do officiate differently, the human side of it, so what one will be giving as a foul one week may not be given the next. You could have a ref in the middle calling the game one way, and a VAR much stricter/more lenient etc, and end up with a confusing, disjointed calling of the game. At least if it's the same guy he's applying his same standard to each call. Removing the jog to the side would be the next step for me.

(I know @galeforce will say they should all call the games identically, but we know they don't.)

How much of it do you think is due to the change? The novelty of VAR, having it on your mind? I suspect as it becomes more normal this will change. For me its not effecting things much, I suspect you may just be a bit sensitive to it?

Bolded - I think your concern RE the time it takes to make decisions is valid, the hold up in the game makes it really disjointed. The most obvious thing in the world for me, the first assumption I made when they announced VAR, was that there would be a ref with the screens who would inform the on-field ref of a decision. Ref 1: "Is that a penalty" Ref 2: [10 seconds later] "Yes, give it".

Instead they did this whole stupid pantomime of the onfield ref going over to a screen and checking for himself and... just ridiculous.
Agreed, I think its probably a temporary thing I was just merely stating I could understand where the poster who raised the point was coming from.

I agree with your second part, I guess they just want the main ref to still have the overall say and are just acting in an advisory role? Or are there instances where the video refs instantly advise the on field ref its a definite penalty etc and the ref gives it without reviewing?

It's rarely a problem in other sports and there is nothing unique about football to suggest that should be more of a problem here.

I think thats where the team element comes in, they should be a coherent unit.

I also think, providing they stick to the rules, consistency shouldnt be hard to find.

And, for me, it should be broadcast - like Rugby. Im convinced if you can hear conversations pretty well all controversy will disappear.

Ref 1: Was that a pen?
Ref 2: Yes, give it.

Ref 1: The ball is in the net, I cant tell if thats offside
Ref 2: He is being played on by the LB, its good.

Ref 2: Theres something happening in the box when that free kick was taken, give me a sec
Ref 1: What happened?
Ref 2: Harry Kane just got done by a piledriver tombstone, penalty to England

Its really not like there needs to be an argument, or even seniority, is it?

It appears to be advisory, and at the refs discretion as to whether he is interested or not. Which for me is clinging to the past somewhat, I dont really know why they hamstring.

Has anyone won a penalty from a dive this world cup? I can't remember one but I forget games a couple of minutes after they are over.

Not that I know of, I havent seen any cheating rewarded really.

The worst Ive seen was the ref letting Tunisia get away with whatever gamesmanship they could come up with against England, but thats down to weak refereeing and nothing to do with VAR.

One benefit that seems to being overlooked is that it should lead to a reduction in cheating and diving.
you think? Maybe on one hand but you will see more going down "with contact" as it seems that any contact is now enough to justify a penalty and in slow motion contact is exaggerated.

That happened anyway. I think that you will see a reduction in diving where there is no contact because you are less likely to win a free kick or penalty and more likely to be booked.

I am sure that officials are aware of how things look in slow motion and will take this into account. Presumably they have the option of looking at it in full speed as well.

Managed fun...

The joy of sport used to be its unpredictability and spontaneity, compared to all other heavily scripted entertainment. But now we are losing all the human and emotional side of it

If it's an innate instinct to cheer, then it is not "managed fun". There is still plenty of room for spontaneity and unpredictability.
Humans will still be involved, so there will always be some room for debate/discussion.
Personally I cannot envisage a time where I will not feel emotions when watching Spurs play. I do not think VAR is going to change things to that extreme.

I keep seeing this, its not really a particular insight. Everyone knows, and can apply some sense. I dont see Refs being duped by it because they cant work it out.

I could cope with that sort of dialogue happening live in real time. But they shouldn't be allowed to look at replays. It needs to be instant.
