Yeah - that's why I'm quietly optimistic about Sessegnon; a similar type deal to Alli (so not arriving till the summer).
In theory he could even train with us one day a week during the spring, like we used to do with some loanees at nearby clubs.
I don't anticipate anyone coming into the squad for this campaign though

I took those comments as getting deals done now for the summer, so like GB says with Sessegnon.
I really think we could use one or two right now though. Of course, we are in that perenial struggle of finding people good enough to impact now who we can actually sign.
Which seems to get more difficult the better we get as a team.
Im a big fan of Zaha, we have a long standing interest and I think he could add real impetus to the second half of the season for us. BUT - Palaces survival probably rests on his shoulders. There is every chance, like last time, they just flatly refuse to deal. And if they are tempted? It will be well out of our price range...

I agree with how you and GB read the comments.
I could see us going for Barkley again. He looks like he fits the squad filler at a decent price criteria. Have him for a couple of seasons and sell at a profit if he does not develop.
I cannot see Zaha being sold with Puncheon and Dann picking up bad injuries against City.

The only way Zaha happens, IMO, is if Palace see an enormous pay check that will buy them 2-3 players to strengthen for the rest of the season.
A major gamble, and one I dont expect them to take, but - thats the only way it happens IMO.

Havent seen enough of him to really say. Seems to have started well and gone off the boil (like Watford). Wouldnt be against it, but not sure they would sell having only just signed him.

I didn't realise, until I started reading Poch's book yesterday, that after we signed Dele from MK Dons and loaned him back, he still trained with us.
"Dele Alli...when we signed him : he trained with us but played for...MK Dons."
How frequently is not stated (but the implication to me is that it was regularly). It may help explain why Dele seemed to adapt so quickly to playing in the first team. It certainly makes sense that something similar could be in place for Sessegnon. And it fits with what Poch has said about signing players in January so that they are ready for the start of next season.

We've done it for years - it's one of the reasons we used to loan to clubs like Brentford, Orient and Millwall a lot (along with them have decent coaches like Warburton and Jackett).

Cabaye and Loftus-Cheek are a decent pairing. Puncheon, Milivojevic and McArthur are passable too.
The one thing that strikes me when you look at is actually how decent the Palace squad is - Sakho, Fosu-Mensah, Schlupp, Benteke, Zaha and Townsend are also all solid mid-table players. They should never have been down where they were.

Cabaye isnt a shadow of what he once was. Loftus-Cheek isnt theirs. I like Puncheon, think he is under rated, but he is only "decent". McArthur is ok. Milivojevic has looked like a rank amateur every time Ive seen him, terrble player.
Townsend is rubbish. For all his obvious qualities he is lacking the ability to put them together in a meaningful way.
Benteke is another who is a shadow of his former self. On form he could keep them up by himself, but it is about 3 years since he found form. Would be great for them if Hodgson can get him firing again.
Defensively I think they are relatively sound, particularly as Hodgson has them well drilled now.

Calvert-Lewin was bought from Sheffield United in August 2016 For £1.5 Million. Not home grown.

But it's good enough. Any half-decent manager would fancy their chances of clawing them up to mid-table with those players at their disposal. Hodgson is a competent (if uninspiring) coach, he will improve the misfiring players like Benteke and Cabeye. Townsend also played some of his best ever football under him for England too.
They need medium-to-long term investment, but that will come in the summer. The risk of disruption by twisting with their main goal threat at this stage isn’t something anyone in their right mind would contemplate.

That is almost exactly how I see it.
I could see them trying to strengthen the middle but it won't be at the expense of Zaha. Lose him and they'll drop like a stone.

But home-grown as in came through an English academy. So doesn't count towards the limit of 17 overseas trained players. Remember we are already at our limit (as Dier counts as overseas; we are at 18 if you include Janssen). It's why Lamela isn't in the CL squad (where slightly different criteria applies)
Basically we can only sign English trained players at the moment, unless we move on GKN or exclude Gazzaniga from our squad.

Maybe. Watching them against City, where they did a VERY credible job, I thought it was plain as day they were really lacking in midfield.
I dont think Cabaye has much more to give, I think he is well on the downslope. And the rest of their midfield just lacks quality (and for the most part, legs). Loftus-Cheek excepted, but of course he is young and learning, and not theirs.
Townsend is doing for them all the things that lead us to sell him. Such a frustrating player, and there arent signs of him improving.
I agree, I dont think Zaha will be made available. BUT I can see some sense in spreading the quality around more rather than putting all their eggs in the Zaha shaped basket. One bad tackle and they would be fudged.
