It feels to me like we're a little behind the curve of where we wanted to be with departures with 28 days to go. With a couple of new signings the squad will be up at 40 players. 4 or 5 youngster loans and 2 clear injuries will bring that down to 33/34 players. It still needs a decent haircut,

In cricket terms, the score is still gettable but the run rate is sneaking up. We can't leave it too long before we hit some more boundaries.

Even the ones that looked sorted - Phillips to Boro, Dorrington to Poland, Scarlett to Wednesday - seem to have snarled up

Interested to know what dates those players went out on loan. I bet almost all were loaned in August and many of them late in August.

Due to our excellent early window business we have a lot less to do in August than we have for years IMO. For once we’re actually in the driving seat.

On the incoming side I think you're spot on.

Not sure what dates we loaned players last season but logically you'd want to be in situ with your new club and get in tune with your new manager's tactics as early as possible. We sometimes see our players starting as bench players. Surely the best chance of them getting a full season's football is to be involved in pre-season. There's probably logical reasons why that's not the case though. Obviously, RDZ wanted time with some of them this year and we've been on the other side of the world on tour. We obviously don't know either whether we need access to them based on our own player sales and injuries. It's clearly a complex equation.

I think it's the player sales where we'd ideally be a bit further forward on, especially if the domino effect is that releases budget for purchases.

I think we are also coming to the area in the window where everyone either wants or wants to keep their attacking talent, its clearly the key area most clubs are looking to improve on, its a tricky area to get right
