Transfer Thread

Not meaning to sound like I'm having a go but there's an odd obsession with attempting to sell someone who is consistent and reliably available in a position that we are heading in to a bit of a crisis with due to losing two first choice players for international duties...Many had him top of the sell list last summer as well, I do think it's a hangover of him being liked by managers that people didn't like, which isn't his fault.

Dier, Lo Celso and Hojbjerg are 3 players I have seen being linked away from the club in January by the media. Gil less so, but there was still some talk of it could happen.

With Bentancur injured again things might have change.

I think we'll get Lloyd Kelly but we won't be able to persuade them to let him go until the end of the window. Ange hinted at knowing we need to get things done early but having issues with selling clubs in one of his interviews etc.

Also Bournemouth have apparently been bugging him to sign a new deal but he's not interested, So I doubt they be happy to let him go on the 1st Jan but who knows hey?

The 3 parties have had since it didn't quite go through on 1 September to sort this. I'm sure it will happen very early in Jan.

I thought the Bournemouth chairman's statement last week was very stage managed (if you read the quotes not the headlines). He basically said they'd managed to get Billing and Solanke to renew, and he hoped Kelly would take the same offer, but ultimately it was up to the players. So a textbook "we tried" for the fans.

Not heard of either, any good?

I liked the idea of Kelly to be honest, but always difficult buying from another Prem club in Jan.

Todibo is 23. Basically a slightly more raw Romero, taller. But a risk taking, ball playing CB with great passing ability.

I believe Dragusin is a similar profile, except he's 21 and a little less proven. Likely a Paritici link as he was a Juve youth player I think.

Edit: I should add Todibo is already capped for France too, was signed by Barcelona when he was 19, didn't quite make it but has been one of the best CBs in Ligue 1 this season.

Sounds like it'll be Todibo or Dragusin rather than Kelly.

We need homegrown, and Kelly being a LB too helps i) us not have to use Royal at LB when Udogie is out and ii) him not having the 'Kane backup' issue of having to permanently wait for Romero and van de Ven to get injured, which less versatile options wont

Any different media outlet could hint that literally any player "could" be sold but that doesn't make it likely. An article could speculate that we're selling Vicario or Maddison, it doesn't mean much as it's all speculation.

Bentancur's injury changing things would suggest that the default plan was indeed to sell PEH this January, and my point is just that I don't see it that way at all. But of course none of us are privy to the exact plans but I don't think they include letting important players leave, not until the summer in Pierre's case but if I'm wrong on that then i'm wrong. It'd mean a big incoming signing though which is unlikely.

I guess we would sell Dier if we could but it's not likely, Gill will have plenty of takers for a loan and GLC looked very useful until yet another injury, don't see us selling anyone on a permanent tbh but perhaps that's a negative prediction, time will tell.

They could, but they haven't.
So I will base possibilities on what's being reported.

No one is paying the fee we want for Hojberg and especially not in January

We don’t need HG
we have plenty of options there now
don’t forget Sarr is Hg next season
I think we will get Kelly in the summer myself and focus on one of the ones we have been linked with Like Todibo can give completion rather than cover

I watch a lot of French football. Todibo is far better then Romero already. I don't rate Romero though.

Dennis cirkin would be a clever signing for reserve left back.

Im probably missing someone obvious, but have we ever had a successful outfield player signing from the French league?

Edit: the obvious exception to the rule is Sarr, but its a massively lower success rate than Italy or Germany

I posted this in the Ange thread but my view is that we need to strenghten defensive options first and that should include ensuring we have a keeper who is comfortable playing with his his feet. Bring in defensive options that can contribute to attack like Toby and challenge Cuti for the RCB spot. Angeball is focused on attacking in numbers, but it follows that it is equally important to have quality reserves in defence where there is usually less players and hence more stress.

Of note, we are still the only team that has scored in every game this season - despite the absence of maddison and solomon. Our main issue is still that we leak goals and improve our goal difference.

Todibo seems to be very highly rated, including by some of you on here.

Seems like he's one that could be difficult to get over the line, others may be after him too, but good to see us linked to him.

It seems more like finding something written that you already wanted to believe and choosing to believe it in place of using rational thought and appreciation of the real life situation. Something isn't only possible because it's touted as a possibility in the press, although Murdoch would no doubt love that you seem to think that's the case!

I bet I can find some ridiculous things written about by the many gooner journo's employed by "respectable" outlets, it doesn't make their predictions plausible, it's just that people want to see "wot they already reckon" as correct and those journalists are pandering to their desired audience (I'm not saying you don't know this already or have even asked for any kind of evaluation of how the "press" operates)

My points are not just aimed at you, just anyone that has the fixation around getting rid of useful players whether that's supported by flimflam rumours or otherwise. We can lose Dier as we have barely needed him and we're desperate to upgrade the position, but we have numbers and quality in CM but injuries/ suspensions are as they are and Pierre imo is a very good player to have for this situation. We'll see if Ange and the board agrees, maybe they just read the papers and do whatever is suggested because the realms of possibility are apparently dictated by what some hack writes in their football blog / twitter / youtube channel ;)

Agreed, he'll have plenty of takers but without a huge amount of money on the continent we won't gain much by letting him go. I'll hopefully move on from this non starter subject shortly but as I've said, it makes absolute sense for us and Pierre to change things up in the summer.

Given that we got him for around 10 / 15 m I'd guess that we'd be happy with him going out for the same after a fair few solid seasons of service.

There's no chance of it happening, as his agent is Jorge Mendes.

So he'd come with conditions like, if he does well, we have to let him leave cheap whenever Mendes decrees. And we'd also need to take two more 'favour' players like Gedson on significant wages.

Mendes is a devil its just never worth dancing with
