Tottenham Vs Sunderland

Talking about linesmen... where has Sian Massey gone? She was brilliant, always getting even the tightest offside calls right. I haven't seen her in a long time now.

another unconvincing performance against a bottom half side, I'm amazed Defoe didn't score against us because that always happens but he did get the free kick that was converted so thats a big assist. That save by LLoris will be forgotten soon but it shouldn't because thats 2 points right there

Only seen MotD - can anyone tell me where the free kick for 'that' offside was taken.

If the ref insisted on it being where Vert was when the ball was kicked it would be quite damning

PS - apparently the other six matches today were away wins, so we were 'special'

It was taken about ten feet into their half, despite the fact that Jan was clearly in his own half when the ball was played to him, a monumental screw up by the Lino and Ref.

I think Poyet honestly rates it as a great decision. He's not being sarcastic or anything, he completely overlooks the fact Verts was in his own half.

Exactly so.

Is there a single player in the entire country who doesn't know you cannot be offside if you receive the ball in your own half? Yet it looked like the lino had already made up his mind regardless simply because there was no one between Verts and the Sunderland goal. He seemed to be mouthing words to that effect on the tv replay.

Unbelievable.

Seriously? Unconvincing? Never giving up? 65%posession? Plethora of chances? Totally dominated the midfield, hit the post, had a perfectly good goal disallowed, didn't lose against a load of dross unlike at start of season, effective subs today too.

Our defending needs to be better and we still lack the ability to put in a decent cross but I've seen enough to convince me that what the manager has done up to now is working and we will keep improving

He was off side, it should never have been given.

We played well yesterday till the final third, we battered them, the only thing that was missing was a clever forward play

Not a convincing performance but happy with the win. Not really surprised we struggled as we always seem to struggle against bottom teams. And disappointingly, we again struggled despite scoring early. We should have used the early goal advantage to kill the game off. Instead, we let Sunderland back into the match and almost paid the price. Fortunately for us, Lloris and Eriksen came to our rescue yet again.

Big credit to Vertonghen and Eriksen for coming up with the goals to get us all the 3 points. It is amazing how Eriksen always comes up with late goals to win us the maximum points. We would be in the bottom half of the league table if not for Eriksen's goals. With Kane unable to continue his goal run, it was important players like Eriksen step up to rescue us which he did. In fact, Eriksen had a good game and could have scored a hattrick but his 2 other shots were saved by the goalie. Kane was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the post in the 1st half. Soldado too wasted another good chance when he couldn't control the ball with only the goalie to beat in the 1st half.

Thought our midfield were decent in the match. But still Sunderland had too many chances to score which they wasted. Nice to see Dembele and Stambouli gelling together in midfield. But they need to be more ruthless to stop other team controlling the midfield. For once, Townsend assisted a goal in the league, even if his cross was poor but still scored by Eriksen. Chadli was disappointing and wasted a few chances. Thought Paulinho did well after coming on so late in the match. He was so unlucky not to get an assist for Vertonghen when the goal was unfairly ruled out for offside. Maybe Paulinho, being a Brazilian, should have aimed for goal himself instead of passing to Vertonghen as there was only 1 defender in front of him with their goalie stuck near our goal.

We cannot be happy with our defence as long as we don't stop conceding goals. It was a brilliant freekick which Sunderland scored from. But we should not have given away the freekick in a dangerous positions like that. Vertonghen was at fault for conceding the freekick to Defoe. But Vertonghen did well to score our first goal, albeit via a deflection. He was also unlucky not to score another when he was wrongly ruled offside late in the match. Not sure how the ref and the linesman could rule him offside when he was clearly inside our half when the ball was played to him. Lloris did well to come up with another match saving safe when the score was 1-1 late in the match. It was a crucial safe which kept up in the match. Not fully convinced of Dier as the defender as he still needs to get more experience. Atleast we stopped Defoe from scoring, even if he didn't have a good game.

It was crucial we got this win after losing to Palace last week. Glad we managed to do just that, even if it came so late. Hope we will now go into the League Cup semi final against Sheffield United in a more confident mood.

I see that Poyet congratulated the officials for making a great decision in his post-match interview.

That's just hilarious! :ross:

Good game from us and a truly deserved win against a side that only looked for the counter attack. Liked the way Stabouli played. Thought he was excellent! BUT, it's very concerning the way we always seem to gift the opposition ENORMOUS chances the last minutes of game! Sunderland could have easily scored 2 or 3 times after we went 2-1 up, with Dier mostly standing still, way off the striker, with his hand up asking for offside.

Yup, it was clear from Sky' extended highlights that Defoe was offside when the ball was played to him and I can understand Vertonghen having a go at the lino afterwards. Seems it was the same lino who ruled Jan' goal offside at the end, perhaps that was the official' idea of revenge for daring to question his earlier flag :-k

If it wasn't for that incorrect decision which lead to their goal then Sunderland would've had nothing to hold onto and couldn't have just parked the bus for an hour. With that extra space in and around their penalty box I'm sure we would've run out comfortable winners.

I'd love to know more about how the club specifically deals with the language problems players/managers/coaches may have as it's an area that fascinates me.

Chas Hodges was on the pitch at half time saying Ossie had learnt how to pronounce "Tott-nm" properly by the time they recorded "win the cup for Totting-ham" and he only did it like that coz they made him :)

I'd be interested to see what those at the game thought as I imagine they would be in the same position as the ref watching the ball, there didn't seem much uproar in the back ground.

Most people around me and what I heard walking back up the road - it was all just discussing the two defenders rule. Didn't hear any angry shouts about the halfway line at all. The break was really fast and it was just too funny and exciting to think we'd score with the keeper where he was. I didn't notice it and I had a great view. The lino shouldn't be so caught up in the excitement to forget to look for rule one though. Idiotic.

21 minutes for Defoe' first offside!

Large chuckle went around the ground for that. Most amusing.

Thought we were quite good. Remember thinking "how the **** are we not winning this" before the Eriksen goal.

Some worries. They had two massive chances they didn't take, and we weren't able to carve out clear cut chances all that often. And this Sunderland side has been shocking at times so it wasn't a great performance. Solid enough considering players missing etc I suppose.

Thought we lost a bit of impetus and shape after Dembele came off. He did well, Stambouli even better I thought.

Eriksen did better from a starting position on the right than he has in the past imo, starting to figure out the system perhaps.

If the bungling lino had got that call correct in the 31st minute then Defoe would've finished the game with as many offsides as he did passes, at 5 a piece

@SunderlandStats: Jermain Defoe made only 5 passes today - the next lowest from an outfielder who started was Fletcher (22)

not great, didn't have a sniff of goal but did fail to play in people on a couple of occasions, not match fit so understandable, he wasn't any worse than anyone else today though, apart from lloris who made one very good stop

Lloris made more than one. There were two absolutely class saves in the second half, the one with the rebound save as well (didn't see who it was, Johnson?) and the Danny Graham one at the end. Extremely sharp when he was needed.
Ade made one very weak shot.
Really happy to see Stambouli have such a good game, esp second half.
