***** Tottenham v Liverpool *****

MOTD picking on both decisions that went against Liverpool, but no mention at all about the Salad handball or Winks getting run over in the penalty area. Tossers!
Shearer’s an appalling pundit to be fair and Jenas just goes with the flow really, he’s on the BBC fast track so never going to go against the grain.

the way Shearer’s going on I think he’s just used the Kane and jota incident to crank up the pressure on var because his team didn’t get a decision.

Also, just noticed the attendance, only 45k.
Were there any restrictions?
Really was quite getting around the grou pond but didn’t seem like the was almost 20k light from my end
There were as always the plebs not wearing masks but the staff all did. We did in my group and we also took our own hand gel which weirdly showed up on the scanner …

Not sure the fuss Klopp and pundits made about the refereeing was just. Kane’s challenge was an ‘orange’ card. VAR didn’t find a yellow was clearly wrong (and it wasn’t). It wasn’t a clear red. The kick out at Royal was a clear red.

Yes their pen was a better shout than ours. But both were soft. Wtf was Shearer on freaking out about the decisions? In the other game yes the Saudi Sportswashing Machine player was taken out but he was never scoring and wasn’t even close to the ball. Sometimes people do get too much moment and follow through. It probably was a pen to ‘castle but certainly wasn’t nailed on as the coming together was incidental.

Alli really helped lift the tempo. He was more ‘awake’ than most of our side in the first half. To me we looked rusty which is to be expected. We lacked the intensity of real games. Certainly our finishing was rusty. Should have got the W. But pleasing to see more creativity in midfield. I still think Royal is better as a CB and Moura or another needs to be at wing back. Royal is great in defence but lacks confidence in attack. Sessengon and Alli were a breath of fresh air. Makings of a good partnership. What I liked about Ndombele was he kept under the radar on the whole, just put in a shift. If he does that the rest will come - the passes and turn etc. Wibks is frustrating. Not sure you can rely on him game ina me out but he showed today he can be an important squad player.

With my Spurs goggles on, a yellow was right for Kane, though I can see the arguments for a red. Do I care? Do I fudge. We’ve been fudged over by poor decisions against Liverpool for a while now, they can do one.

Also, it was their first red card in 112 matches so anyone moaning can fudge right off.

Completly irrelevant! The ball could be on the other side of the pitch, it's still a penalty.

it’s not a challenge for the ball. The keepers momentum carries him into the player. The keeper is not trying to take the man out. As I said it probably was a pen, but certainly wasn’t nailed on. Otherwise any follow through where you run into someone could be deemed a foul.

just watched a 40 minute highlights reel of the game, and the lasting thing for me is where has this Winks and Dele been for the past 18 months? I know that Dele missed a couple of chances, but the difference is he was in a position to actually miss them - he's bimbled about like your Nan trying to remember where she left her Rothmans for the past season or so - today he was in that hole behind Kane and Son and doing what he did so, so well when we stole him from MK Dons.

A word about Kane too - he needs to be more up top to enable Dele to play like that, and he did it really well. I agree with a couple of earlier posters, it felt like a game from the Poch era today, we had a shape, a system, a way of beating the opposition and played with confidence and swagger at times. If we can get Cuti back fit, and a little more end product from the wing backs, we're going to be hard to handle at home now.

The intention is also irrelevant. 90% of the time, players don't intend to make a free kick. Doesn't mean its not a free kick anyway. He wipes him out, and stops him from challenging for the ball. Stone wall penalty. You need to have a look at the rules. I've been a ref for 30 years, so I'm not stating my opinion, I'm stating facts.

Stonewall you say…So if you run into someone on the pitch accidentally, it should always be a foul?

Countless times in a game you see players block other players. Kane was blocked from pressing the keeper by their CB just subtly stepping into his path. It was a block, there was no attempt to play the ball and there was intent. But it wasn’t a foul. The keepers momentum in city-castle game was so strong it probably was a foul and pen. But it wasn’t as clear cut as Shearer maintained. There was no impact on the game and not even the remotest chance of the player scoring, the follow though, not a challenge, took the castle player out.

Why do think it means brick? I’ve never heard anyone give a good explanation / justification!

It’s obviously far from a perfect measure of quality of chances, but it’s better than nothing. E.g. in this game Liverpool had more possession, more shots, and more shots on target - anyone who didn’t watch the game might think they were the better team, without seeing the xG stat. And anyone who did watch and thought Liverpool were the better team might at least be given some food for thought by seeing the xG.
Its the most useless stat i have seen and is used to create even more argument about who deserved to win. We were expected to score 1.65 and Liverpool 1.29 but it ended 2-2 so how is it even relevant?
