*** Tottenham Hotspur vs S.L. Benfica OMT ***

Sounds like we're gonna get smashed :(

I think it will be a fairly even tie. But the fact that Benfica is currently hitting their top form and have great momentum in the Portuguese league might swing it their way. I'm guessing confidence might not be flying high in the spurs squad since Saturday..

Don't really get the chance to follow much european football so can anyone give a brief description of how well Benfica have been playing this season both in their league and in Europe.

SeedyRon has summarized it well. Massive disappointment not to go through from the champions league group, especially since this years final will be at Estadio da Luz. Started the year relatively badly with Jesus trying out som new tactics, however they've hit their stride since December and pretty much won every game they've played. Brushed PAOK aside quite easily in the las Europa league tie, but so would Spurs.

Hello everyone!

Been a reader of this forum for many many years, though not an active poster. I did post a few comments back in 2007 under a different username (which I've forgotten..) when we signed Ricardo Rocha from Benfica. What a success story he turned out to be.. That clearance against the **** still haunts my memory.

Anyways, due to my family background I have strong ties with Benfica which I've supported my whole life. As a life long Spurs supporter as well this is the fixture I've been dreaming about/dreading for quite some time. Either way I'll both win and lose this tie. I thought however I might shed some light on the current Benfica team as I assume some of you don't know the squad that well, or what Spurs are up against.

First of all, if anyone has the chance to go to Lisbon to see the return game you absolutely should. Lisbon is a great city, and still fairly cheap when it comes to overnight stays, food and drinks. The stadium is beautiful, great atmosphere and very easily accessible by metro. About 15-20 min ride from the city center.

On to the team it self. Many probably have noticed Benficas climb back into the European spotlight during the last 5 years, culminating in last years Europa League final which Chelsea nicked in the end. The team has produced som outstanding players which consequently have been sold on with huge profits, however forcing the team to reorganise every summer. Examples are Di Maria, Coentrao, Ramires, David Luiz, Matic and Javi Garcia.

The backbone of the team is the strong center half pairing of Luisao and Argentinian international Garay. Very physical, strong and also a threat at set pieces. Somewhat lacking in pace though, which Spurs might be able to exploit. Left back and right back are decent, but nothing extraordinary. If Lennon and Townsend, if he plays, should be able to cause some problems with their pace. The Benfica defence however is in an unbelievable form, conceeding just 1 goal in the last 16 games, coinciding with the promotion of the back up keeper Oblak to the first team. Amazing talent and shot stopper, still only 20 years old.

Matic, who left for Chelsea in january, has been the dominant midfield player the last couple of seasons in Benfica and the Portugues league. The void in the team has been filled by fellow Serbian international Fejsa, however he is not half the player Matic was. He is good at breaking up play though so watch out for som intense tackles on Dembele/Sandro/Eriksen pending on whoever plays. The engine in the middle is Enzo Perez, arguably Benficas best player this season. Box to box midfielder with outstanding work rate. On the left wing you have Nico Gaitan which is in the form of his life scoring some outragous goals lately. Pacy and full og tricks with a great lef foot. Goes down very easily though so might wind up Walker quite a bit I would emagine. On the right wing is a new Serbian wonderboy Marcovic. Only 19 and still quite raw, but probably the fastes player in the team. Roumor has it Chelsea already have a deal in place for him and he'll only stay in Benfica until the end of next season. If Jan is playing left back he'll be runned cirkles around I'm afraid. Fryers should thus be the obvious choice.

In the attack you have Lima and Rodrigo. Both very agile and always looking for the ball. Cardozo, which has been linked to spurs quite a few times, has been injured much of the season and will probably be on the bench.

In general the Benfica coach Jorge Jesus has previously employed a gung ho style of play, often leading to plenty of goals both ways. This season he's changed that somewhat and Benfica play much more calculated and on the counter attack. If Spurs turn up with a high back line I think the pace of the counter attacks will prove costly. Jesus has stated that the domestic league is top priority for Benfica, whilst the Europa League is all Spurs have left this season to be frank. So the motivation might be in favour of Spurs. Will be a great tie for sure!

Welcome and thanks for the report. Perhaps you should email it to Tim and the coaching boys - probably better than what they have?

Gaitan will no doubt be the player everyone is told to look out for but I have never been impressed. Holds onto the ball too long for my liking and doesn't release the right ball anywhere near often enough even when it is the obvious choice. Lazar Markovic is not someone I have seen but he seems to be quite widely regarded, as is Rodrigo. Guilherme Sequeira is supposed to be a decent full back and Oscar Cardozo speaks for himself. One area we should target is the keeper, Artur is dodgy as f***, woeful at coming for crosses.

A clean sheet is going to be important so 1-0 would be a good result but 2-0 would be perfect. Definitely capable of advancing but the result at home will be key because it will be a tough ask out there in Lisbon.

Players who are 1 yellow card away from suspension in the EL -
Tottenham: Dawson, Vertonghen
Benfica: Gaitan, Pereira, Perez, Silvio

Interesting reading the report from SpursAguia there; many thanks for taking the time to write in.=D>

I wonder if Veljkovic is ready to play for us? If so, he could give TS a way to be seen to be 'punishing' Vertonghen by not playing him and keeping him fit to start on Sunday? :-k

I'm of the mind to go all in for this match. Qualification for the CL looks a bit of a pipe dream at this stage so this is the last competition with something realistically at stake. Let's go for it.

Sounds like we're gonna get smashed :(

unfortunately i think we will....this lot are a different gravy to anything weve faced in europe this season. They play progressive attacking football like id love us to play:(

It's not so much about them. They just need to be a decent side to worry me. I just think we are a bit of a mess right now. Confidence is fragile, the football is still poor. We're just not in a good place overall. I know we have accumulated a lot of points but it doesn't feel like a happy place where the lads are enjoying their football. I sense a certain amount of fear.

It's the only competition we have left (I've given up on 4th), so we should go out all guns blazing. No need to hold back for Sunday (we should go out all guns blazing then too). It's a home game, so no travel fatigue, which is good. Have no idea how good Benfica are, but they are probably about as good as us on a good day, so definitely a chance of winning over two legs. I'm worried about our central defenders though. Hopefully Dawson can play (never thought I'd say that).

Benfica have won their last 7 without even conceding a goal and are unbeaten in their last 17 (15 wins, 2 draws).#-o

We are a million miles away from a side that can regularly keep clean sheets.. Hopefully we get a bit of luck on Thursday becasue I think we might need it.

I'm concerned about this match ... March could really fall apart if it goes badly wrong

So Dembele then?

Now we know Kaboul is available for Sunday, I wonder if this will affect the likelihood of him playing against Benfica. Doubt he's fit enough to play Thursday-Sunday just yet, but there aren't very many alternatives if Dawson is unfit.

I'd play kaboom on Thursday rather than Sunday - we can't afford to f' this up too badly first leg and Sunday is a write off anyway if we do get torn to shreds on Thursday.

I hope the players and Tim bring their A game for this one sounds like we'll need it!

i think it is now time for us to stop chopping and changing tactics and formations. I feel the one that suits us best is the one that TS started with. Two up front and the wonky. This may leave us a bit exposed at the back but with a genuine DM in front of the back four our frailties would be minimized.

Thus my team ( and their direct replacements) would be:

.......................Lloris (Friedel).................

Walker Kaboul. Verts. Rose
(Naughton). (Daws). (Vlad). (Fryers)

Townsend. Sandro. Dembele. Eriksen
(Lennon ). (Capoue). (Bentelab). ( Sig/ Chadli)

..........................Ade ..........Solly.....................
(Lamela /Pauli/ Kane)

Time to stop frigging around. Give the team some shape and structure and only substitute (as far as possible) like for likes.

I think that is all we can now do. May or may not work against Benfica or the Arsnl, as these games come too soon, but should at least give us a firmer foundation from which to progress in the future IMO.
