Panathinaikos v Tottenham Hotspur: match preview
Who: Panathinaikos v Tottenham Hotspur
Where: Olympic Stadium, Athens
When: 6pm, ITV4
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas cannot understand why the Europa League is so undervalued in England.
Villas-Boas’s career took off two years ago when he won the competition with Porto to cap a sensational season during which he won four trophies and replaced Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea. Although that move turned sour, the 34 year-old is still regarded as one of the most promising coaches in Europe.
Former manager Harry Redknapp described participating in the tournament as a “punishment” and, although he was at pains to insist he was not criticising his predecessor, Villas-Boas insists the tournament is greatly undervalued in England.
“The profile of the competition is raised in other countries, but not England. I don’t understand it,” Villas-Boas said.
“I respect the competition. I certainly think it is viewed as a punishment in England and I cannot understand why. It is a traditional trophy. You could build the most sensational team of all time out of Europa League winners.”
Greek tragedy?
"Mr. Katsouranis is history at Panathinaikos." So said club chairman Yiannis Alafouzos, who kicked the Panathinaikos captain off the team in a surprise move yesterday after winning only one of its five league matches this season.
Opposition form
Panathinaikos currently lie in 12th place in Greece's 16-team league, with four points from five matches. (They had two points deducted due to fan violence last season.) The Greek outfit lost their opening Group J match to Slovenian club Maribor 3-0 last month.
Team news
Tottenham will be without striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who has still not recovered from a hamstring injury. Brad Friedel has not travelled to Athens, so Hugo Lloris is likely start in goal.
