In the 4-2-3-1 it was typically the CBs who would fill in at fullback with the deep midfielder filling in as a central defender if a ball was played over the top into the channel by the opposition. That is why Pochettino liked having centre backs who had also played as fullbacks in their career (he spoke about this in a few interviews) as he needed his CBs to be able to be comfortable defending one on one in wide areas against the opposition's wide forwards.

Many a game, Dembele would do the shielding back in his own box down the channels, he was absolutely incredible at it as was Wanyama.

We don't have that anymore

We can still do it...!
If only we get some belief..We have Hugo Loris..proven one of the best keepers in the World..Ok we have some defenders that should not really play!.OK lets get a player or two or three in the defence then!..lol.We have Perisic who was brilliant for Croatia this World Cup.We have Romero who ended with a World Cup winners medal! Davies can play a bit!! We need a World class centre back!from somewhwere..lets do it!Definate OK then easy..lol.The midfield needs sorting out ..granted understatement..and we need some punch there!..we have one of the best attacking midfielders in Moura who can be used as mid game substitute if needed.who got us to our first Champions League final ! let us need not forget!.one extra signing here might help..OK..now then..Where the fudge is Skip..last time he had games under his belt he was improving immensely!!We have Kulu..now then.. you all reckon he's not too badOK then... We have Sonny who delivered the best pass in the World Cup with a Batman mask on! and also won the fudging golden boot last year! We have Richarlison who scored the winner of the best goal in the World Cup..actually one of his others nearly won as well.lol.Note Neymar hardley ever passed to him!Then lastly but not least... we have Harry Kane who is easily our worst player..but never mind he'll do for now."Maybe you can think of one or two other players we have that might take up the challenge"...Now then all you Spurs fans why in hells name are we so pesimistic with all these fantastic players with two or three additions that needs to come in. We could make it happen if only there was the direction and belief..Anyway.. the trouble is! I'm not the Chairman or Manager with the belief to guide us through to this success.. unfortunately...sigh..
