Tony Benn RIP

How would that work? Surely you can't have a nationalised industry without stealing the money out of my pocket? So if I choose to send my kid to a private school I get a refund on the school portion of my tax? Same for medical care? I could go for that.

Well before we do that,we would need to change the current status of private schools.

So they're not charities?

So on the £12k I pay the schools they pay 20% corporation tax and put their prices up to cover it. But I save £6k in tax relief?

Still works for me although I can't help but think that you're trying to stack the game in favour of the public sector - comps don't pay taxes either you know.

Why do you think that ? I am allowing true competition between funding the shareholder and funding the services of the country. Of course Comps don't pay tax they are funded by the state.

I mean my idea would be hard to bring about on something such as the railway. However we already have this idea in healthcare.

I think that transport will always be difficult because of the central resource (tracks) which must be shared.

Health care seems to work quite well - I get what I pay for most of the time. We still need to fix the problem of me paying twice though.

Gave up his title but not the lifestyle that went with it.

Adrian Durham's favourite politician.

In the Bob Crowe thread, someone complained that he lived in a council house. Can you right wingers please make your mind's up? :ross: Still, Wedgey Benn, another man who refused to sell out.

That was me, I think council homes should be for the most needy and Crowe and his missus with their combined income would not in my opinion fall into that category.

As for Benn good on him for giving up his title if he did not believe in it, i am not aware of how he made his money. The would be an issue if he was one of those left wing people who call for no inheritance and then inherited money. But I am not sure as I have never really followed him that closely.

If someone gets a well paid job then they have earnt the right to do what they wish with that wage. The issues only come if people lecture others on wealth and how people should share wealth out but do not live as they preach. It would not be the same for right wing people because usually there brains are hard wired to believe that making money is good thing and the spoils of there or there parents hard work should be there's or passed down the generations.

I have made some money and I wish it to go to my son when I die, if I was someone of an left slant ideology then it would be wrong for me to pass it onto my son I would have to give to charities etc.

Not saying this is the case with Tony Benn as I do not know how he made his money.

Sometimes I find your posting style so bitter and find that you jump into threads just to have a go at people without trying to understand there view point. I think you would have a greater understanding on life if you opened up your mind and tried to understand how others think.

Have a nice day.

No it wasn't you, although you might have posted later in agreement. You seem a tad confused too Chich. In the Crowe thread you said you admired that I stood up for what I believed in. Now I'm confused. Not bitter at all, just pointing out that to some, people on the left cannot win. If they live a humble lifestyle, they shouldn't, if they live an opulent lifestyle they shouldn't.

You have a nice day too.

No I do admire that you stand up for what you believe I was just responding to the right wingers are never happy. I think if you tried to get into our mindset you would understand a thing that ticks a lot of us of is the hypocrisy of the left or champagne socialism. Not saying you or Tony Benn are champagne socialists but I think that is what a couple of posters are hinting at.

Not sure anyone would complain about someone leading a humble lifestyle, the criticsm aimed at Benn in this thread was that he gave up his title but not the lifestyle that went with it. Though you would have to ask that poster what he meant to be sure at what he was getting at.

Slightly off topic but the most devout lefty I know is the husband of one of my wife's friends, proper socialist party worker members. Turns out he has been doing trading on ebay for years and not declaring it despite using it to live off. Now I feel I am obligated to tell the authorities about this. But the amount of times I have had to listen to him sprouting off about millionaire tax dodgers is unreal.

Think the is an example of a lot of the problems people on the right feel towards the left and "working class heroes" that they all have their hands in the trough but are just not as successful as the right(tories) when doing it.

The Crowe thread had someone complaining that he lived in a council house, that's a humble lifestyle, then Yossarian complained that Benn lived an opulent lifestyle. There isn't any evidence that either were on the take, so I don't understand why either should be criticised. As for your aquaintance, if he has dodged tax, he should get everything coming.
