Thomas Frank - Head Coach

You need the players to play great passing football first - i haven't seen that since 2018, so no evidence to suggest these players are capable of that. We certainly didn't play great passing football last season or the one prior with the bulk of this squad.

And the inability to do so this season is not just on manager instructions like being painted, some are just not up to it or don't have the conviction

I think that the tactics/direction from the manager will be contributing - we cannot absolve him of responsibility but there seems to be this idea that we were a good passing team prior to this season being pushed which is just absoloute poppyrooster

It will play its part, but as per the errors and the lacking of basics, I think that comes from a core of the players and yes confidence and manager..........I don't think booing them when the touch the ball helps either.

But I agree and def agree with your summary

Trophies appease supporters temporarily, form makes them happy. Winning the EL was a sticking plaster

Just as winning West Ham’s first European trophy since 1965 wasn’t enough for Moyes to keep his job when the team exhibited such a losing mentality in domestic league… a PL century of mostly misery for both of us punctuated by a cup run.

I think in our case it was sorely needed and we needed to get the monkey off our back. I agree with the sentiment though, if you’re not a consistent team or you’re watching rubbish football, the fans will get disgruntled.

Our fans get a bad rep, especially on here. But I feel we’re not as hard to please as some make out. The fanbase was pretty united Poch, Redknapp and Jol. Even under Conte the fans were onside for the most part and the football was hardly scintillating.

The reason they get a bad rep, in part, is because they don't help themselves in the main. This place was awash with "would you take a couple of years of 14th and the odd cup" debates to the point it was about as interesting as the yearly Poch debate haha, many of whom have now parked it and taken a turn down negative lane despite protesting so much in that debate. Thats not to say they can't be, they can be what they like, but its not consistent at all at times.

My gripe is should we be booing individuals at football matches again especially given those guys, regardless if I think they are good enough, were absolute heroes 6 months ago? The answer to that for me is no and its a major talking point given the press the booing has gained.

I have not seen that?
What I am seeing is people pondering why we aren't looking to build a style of football that is more in line with who we are rather than continuing to hammer this one-method horseshoe thing we're seeing. I think it'd be much easier to enjoy the patience Frank should doubtless be shown if we could see signs that at the end of it, we'd be playing football which at least reflects a desire to take that approach.

I agree with some of what you've said, and am interested in what you see the bigger picture as?

So some context.

We are in a phase of the PL where you're just not gonna see the attractive football of yesteryear. There is no an attractive team in this league, in the way that we may have thought about City a few years ago. Even City have gone direct. So if anyone thinks they're going to see Frank or any other team in this league play football that will get you out of your seat then think again. The PL is dull as ditchwater.

We are just 14 games into the league season. As we saw with the other comps in prior years, you just can't assess them in the same way you do the PL games. For the PL, you learn most by watching PL games. Frank is helping these guys get over the hangover of conceding more than 60 goals for 3 consecutive seasons, including one where a striker got 30 himself. That is a massive barrier to blast through for our club. It is absolutely foundational to future success and I'm glad he's teaching the fundamentals.

We're a young side without 3 talismanic players who play in key attacking positions. Most clubs would struggle without 3 of their senior attacking players. Hopefully, other players will assume their roles over time, but not within the first 14 games.

Let's collect way more data before we go too early.

Well, I've just sat and read through 30 pages of posts on a Friday night, and I've learned that Grays1980 has become MartyFunkhouser but doesn't have a space in the name, so the "er" will forever wrap around underneath the "MartyFunkhous", rendering him a German DJ from 1983 forever more.

In other news. A midfielder receives the ball in 10 yards of space, with a plentiful 1.3 seconds to decide what to do. Does he
(a) scuff a shin-bobbler straight back where it came from and hide behind an opponent, rendering the entire existence of life on this planet pointless
(b) receive it on the half turn, having already checked who is closing him down and who is making a run, and play a pass along the floor into the path of his team mate who has darted forth and anticipated what is possible
