A long over view by me, feel free to disagree etc
A lot has been said about the way we have gone about our business (not the first time!) and the balance of our squad since the transfer window closed. Our dear Leader has to shoulder a lot of the blame for seeming late nature of addressing the most threadbare area of our squad and I totally agree that the way it ended up on deadline day was farcical. There are a lot of people who reported issues with the deal for Berahino, rumors of five million up front with add-ons up to twenty five million were met with surprise from club sources who insisted that it was a lot more cash up front at a previously agreed price. Either way to leave it to the last day was a complete joke.
Since the end of last season we knew we needed two strikers are poor old Bobby (thriving in Spain now) and Greedybayor were not going to be involved. We signed Son who despite the social media outroar that he is not a real striker is a capable striker and has played there a lot. N'jie is also a wing forward who will chip in with goals so we have bought in goals to the team. However as much as I think Son is going to be a good player, a lone front man he is not. Can you imagine the stick he is going to get if Kane is injured and we are under pressure away from home and were lumping balls up for him to contest/hold up? Let's be honest our style of play has a long way to go to be as pleasing as it was four years ago. In emergencies Chadli and Dembele could do a job up front I suppose at a stretch.Berahino has that lightning pace that frightens defenders though. a 4/10 for our forward transfers this summer, I would have given a 6 if we had managed to offload Ade...
Ok time for an analysis of the other parts of the squad that aren't as divisive! Our achilles heel last season was our defense. Out mistake ridden, hilariously kamikaze defense. I am very impressed with the transformation and attention paid to it. Toby looks very good so far (Mistake vs Stoke aside) and Wimmer and Trippier are very good young players who will put actual pressure on the first team. Kyle Walker has had to compete with sub par players and youth team players for his comfy right back spot for the last couple of years, now he has some actual competition he might improve to be something more than a glorified sprinter. I don't hate Kyle Walker, I just think he is a poor football player. Whether it is his crosses that hit the first man 8/9 times out of 10 or his sometimes inexplicable positioning or inability to control a football under no pressure what so ever. Trippier is a good defender with brilliant crossing ability. Harry Kane will thrive off the kind of balls that Trippier can launch into the box. Yedlin going on a season loan is a real test of him and what he needs. When it to the rest of the defense - I am delighted we will never see Kaboul in our defense again and Rose and Davies are decent left back choices to switch around. Oh and who could forget Mad Vlad!!! Good riddance to bad rubbish. I give the dealings a 9/10 as it was prioritized and done early.
The midfield is an interesting one. I think we have done some great business with the players we have offloaded and brought in. We've gotten rid of Paulinho, Capoue, Holtby, Stambouli and Lennon. None of them will be missed. You could maybe have a case for Lennon but he is so injury prone and inconsistent that his sale is fine by me. I know we've got rid of holding mids in Capoue and Stambouli but neither were good enough for us. Stambouli too slow and Capoue a pale shadow of the player who we signed initially who we thought was going to be an absolute boss. We have Carroll and now Dier who can fill in in that role. Whilst neither are what you call specialist defensive mids, they can both do a better job than what we had there last season and Carroll in particular is a great passer from the base of the midfield. Pritchard has come back from loan as well and he is a very exciting player. Voted into the championship team of the year, he has fantastic season scoring 12 goals from midfield as well as being the creative fulcrum of an exciting team that fell short in the end (ha sounds like a typical spurs team). He will provide much needed creativity and hopefully will see a lot more minutes on the pitch than Lamela or Townsend. Son and N'Jie will probably switch between midfield and forward roles in wide areas to give Chadli and Eriksen some real competition as well as providing some more needed pace to our play. 8/10 as we have got in some real quality and offloaded some real burdens
Honorable mention to the departing Bonjani Khumalo – we knew you too little
Transfer dealings for a whole averages at 7/10 by my ratings and I stand by that. The only bad part being the lack of a true alternative to Kane, Peace out Yids
