The overrated films thread

I don't agree with all the people saying the Sixth Sense. If anything, I think you get rewarded with repeat viewings for obvious reasons, I won't ruin the ending for people who haven't seen it.

American Beauty was sold as a drama but also had plenty of laughs. I found maybe 1 or 2 scenes in the entire film to be funny. All of the characters are weirdos. And then there's the scene with the plastic bag floating around "oh look at how random and beautiful the world is", load of gonads if you ask me. I thought Kevin Spacey was brilliant, that's about it.

Can't agree with the last one. It cost around $200m, you can see every penny of it on the screen! The action scenes alone are fantastic. Not to mention the special effects, which were groundbreaking at that time! Each to their own.

I dont dislike Owen, its just that I find his stuff so often overrated.

I enjoyed Inside Man, without thinking it was anything special. Thought he was perfectly cast in Children of Men and would say my favourite film of his is Shoot Em up (mad genius!) - but he is monotone in his range and wildly overrated in what he puts out. Generally its just 'ok' instead of 'Excellent'
 
Terminator 2 is the ultimate action flick imo, the main grumble from those who don't like it is that it isn't the same type of movie as the first - which was more of an intense sci fi thriller, T-2 is all out action - and it does it well
 
drive - to much repetition of the same songs, and more to the point, in a film called drive, about a stunt driver, who's also a getaway driver, who works in a garage, i was kinda hoping for a proper car chase, parking under a turnpike and avoiding a mustang didn't really cut it

So, in effect had the film being called something different, you would have rated the film more highly?

Any sci fi or fantasy such as star wars, lord of rings, star trek, harry potter - never seen them dont want to see them so cant say if overrated or not.

no, however, had i met the film without any expectations or preconceptions due to high praise amongst friends i may have a more positive reflection on it

i expect that its the same story for many of the suggestions in this thread, nothing is ever as good as people make it out to be, other than star wars obviously, which is the greatest thing ever in the history of the universe and will change your life
 
yeah i thought Drive was a decent enough movie but not worth the hype or high reviews at all. a good 7/10 movie though

No seriously look I loved Stupid Crazy Love (watched it last week), I loved Cool Runnings (top three movies - should have won an oscar) BUT my two fave movies are Good will hunting and Sleepers.

There are plenty of other movies I love I just hate sci fi and fantasy movies. I also hate those 'gangster/mafia' style movies like Godfather or Goodfellas - all that happens is people die, people get killed, drugs etc etc etc I love scarface tho

Because it tries to be deep and mysterious by everyone talking slowly and holding long stares. It's a ghost story with some stock standard scares and a very good twist ending. If it played to that, then it would be a very good film. But it tries to be something bigger and you're supposed to forgive that it's slow, long, boring and one paced because it's apparantly better than other horrors. The Others did it a lot better, and I preferred Unbreakable out of M Knight Shimbomba's movies.

I'd agree excepct for Little Miss Sunshine - thought it was brilliant

Lord of the Rings has to be one of the biggest, single most overrated pieces of toss in the last 25 years.
