Euro 2012: Alan Shearer says England cannot win World Cup

Former captain Alan Shearer believes England have no chance of winning the 2014 World Cup and are "a million miles away" from the top international sides.

Roy Hodgson's side were knocked out of Euro 2012 by Italy on penalties.

"I don't attach any blame to Roy Hodgson," Shearer told BBC Sport. "But I don't go along with the idea England go home with their heads held high.

"It's no good sitting here saying we will win the World Cup in two years' time. The reality is we will not."

Hodgson's side were beaten by Italy last Sunday after being outclassed in a goalless draw in Kiev.

England's players won plaudits for an improved performance in Poland and Ukraine, after a disastrous World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

Germany coach Joachim Loew - who masterminded a 4-1 thrashing of Fabio Capello's side two years ago - has praised Hodgson's management, and said that "England will develop under him in the next few years."

But Shearer sees a vast gulf in quality between England and the likes of Spain and Loew's Germany side.

"The big thing people have spoken about is the togetherness and work ethic but if you just want 11 guys to go out and work hard, I can find you 11 men from Saudi Sportswashing Machine city centre who will work their socks off," he said.

"That has to be a given, whether at a club or even more so for an international team.

"We are a million miles away from the top sides. Heads held high? Do you think France will go home to that reception?

"It's a sign of how far behind we are now that we can go home and say we can hold our heads up high for getting into the quarter finals."

The Football Association recently voted in proposals for youth coaching which include smaller-sided games on smaller pitches with smaller goals.

But Shearer believes any progress on the international stage will need a vast improvement in the coaching culture of the country, which could take years.

"It's no good sitting here saying we will win the World Cup in two years' time," he said. "The reality is we will not.

"We have got to get out of the habit of going to tournaments thinking we can win it. This tournament has proven that. We need a change in culture and to be fair to the FA they are trying to change things now.

"It's going to take time to put these systems in place. Our league is the best in the world for entertainment but only because it is full of foreigners."
Fellow England international and BBC Sport pundit Lee Dixon also called for changes.

"Let's remind ourselves where we were two years ago under Capello," he said. "We have come on, the team was an absolute shambles. We have repaired that but we haven't moved forwards football-wise.

"If you go and watch how they teach kids to play football on the continent, they are all doing it a different way to us. And we are not progressing, so they must be doing it right.

"It's not rocket science."

Fair play to Shearer for having the balls to say this. Ex players like Redknapp, Merson, Le Tissier and co do the country no favours by keep perpetuating the myth that we are a football powerhouse and that Rooney didn't have a bad tournament and making excuses for him.

Such a shame this match tonight isn't the final. I personally believe Italy have been one of the better teams in the competition this year, the tactics they have used have been spot on and at times played some decent stuff.

Spot on, I can't dance with a word of that

I agree. They made Spain look ordinary in the first game and looked more dangerous going forward. Prandelli has realised their strength is the midfield so therefore they aren't as defensive as usual Italian sides.

exactly, the penny has finally dropped amongst some pundits. Vast majority of the fans have been saying this since the middle of sven's reign.

He is saying what a lot of fans have known for years.

I don't get why people like Harry and Jamie Redknapp, Terry Venables and various other ex players and managers keep banging the "we can win it drum", it just shows to me that they are all incredibly deluded, or they don't watch football besides the premier league, or both.

This. Its all the flimflam the media print about how many English players are world class, truth be told we probably have one only.

They don't want to be painted as being 'negative'.

You gotta remember, there's still an awful lot of muppets who think England have some devine right to be successful 'because they invented the game'. Someone invented the car, but it looks jack brick like a Bugatti Veyron.

The print media - journalists - are treated as demigods in the UK; having their own Sunday morning show on Sky Sports :ross:

I honestly don't think England has one "worldclass" player. They do, however, have thousands of overpaid, overhyped primadonnas who are habitually subjected to a bi-annual humiliation.

I think Ashley Cole is world class, but he is the only one. imo

It's not just England. Many Amercian sportswriters have their own shows on ESPN.

Yeah I'd agree that Cole is the only player in our team who is World Class. The only one from our line up that could potentially be world class too is Joe Hart.

Ronaldo has proved once again that he is a big bottler when it comes to playing international matches for Portugal. After doing well in the last 2 matches, he has gone back to being shyte for Portugal again. I think Portugal could have beaten Spain if Ronaldo made use of the few chances that he got. He had a golden chance to score the winner against Spain but couldn't even find the target. Apart from that, he also wasted a few freekicks from dangerous positions. And he got too big headed in the penalties. As Portugal's best player, he should have taken the first penalty instead of 5th.

Got mixed feelings about Spain making the final. They are not getting many friends this time with their boring boring football. It is so boring to watch that makes you want to sleep instead.

All the pressure will be on Germany to overcome Italy in the semi final. I think Italy are one of a few teams the Germans are really scared to play due to their terrible record against them. Italy will have the psychological advantage going into this match. But without a top striker to score goals, I think Italy will struggle to maintain their good record.

Used to hate Italy due to their many big ego players. But nowadays they don't seem to have too many big-ego players. In fact, they seem to be down-to-earth nowadays. It was embarassing the way they celebrated after qualifying to the quarter finals. Their coach even made a 21km pilgrimage to celebrate that. They seemed to have forgotten they are 4-time World Cup champions, not a tiny nation like Moldova. Perhaps lowering their expectations gives them less pressure. Let's see how they do against Germany.

You are probably right about Hart, but he still has a lot to learn about distrubtion.

Italy XI: Buffon; Balzaretti, Bonucci, Barzagli, Chiellini; De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio, Montolivo; Cassano, Balotelli

Germany XI: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm; Kroos, Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Özil; Gomez, Podolski
