*** The official 2025/26 Premier League thread ***

I do try and stay away from calling anything we do not like in football bent, lets be honest most fans are really good at saying that[ especially when we lose games]. But VAR is not good for the game IMO and has spoilt a lot of what made going to a game so good. Each to their own though.
I don’t particularly like to automatically call something corrupt either. However, this season leaves me with no alternative other than to believe the ludicrous truth: it IS bent and it HAS decided the title winners. Human error and incompetence only goes so far and that point is way behind in the rear-view mirror of officials and VAR-laden ‘mistakes’ which have favoured Woolwich and ensured they have accrued the required number of points.

Zero pens conceded all season? Check - despite CBs that foul like prime Huth and Morgan.

Zero red cards all season? Check - despite head butts, studs out high tackles and Lord knows what else.

Significant % of goals scored through interfering with opponents? Check - ignored at all times by all officials.

Requirement to chalk off opponents goals to conserve Woolwich leads? Check - see files named ‘Tottenham’ and West Ham’.

Well as they like to say it s all about opinions but as i say as long/soon as we can get rid of it [VAR] the game will be a lot better off. IMO

Common sense says there’s no way incompetence could be this bad, and also no way it could always favour/punish the same teams over and over.

As much as we say the refs are terrible, they still made it to PL levels and the number of mistakes is beyond suspicious.

Clearly corrupt imo. Has been getting steadily worse since the turn of the year.

We’re watching WWE at this stage.

It’s not bent, but the narratives and momentum obviously play a part in the emotion of matches and referees for some reason get caught up in it. It’s why teams at the top general get what many people consider favours.

I genuinely wish I agreed with your prognosis; but I cannot. There have been countless examples for Arsenal alone where both the ref and the ‘safety net’ of VAR has failed to find the correct decision. Emotion/excitement/momentum/incompetence/human error simply don’t explain the sheer number of positive decisions they’ve got. Further, I’d argue that VAR allows the officials to step outside the ‘emotion’ of having to make a split-second decision and gives them a moment (or even up to 5 mins+) to get it CORRECT. They’ve chosen not to do that in hundreds games this season. They then think that the public will be blinded when they announce that they’ve ‘only’ made about 30 errors all season. They’re able to mark their own homework and create their own narrative.
