The mighty Tottenham Hotspur vs Benfica OMT

I'd like to see us go with a formation that see's us play with Paulinho and Eriksen supporting/floating around near Soldado. Keep Walker and Rose as our wing backs and block out the midfield with a combination of Bentaleb, Sandro and Dembele (if fit), then pray for magic.

PS: In light of our problems in defence I'd rather see us keep possession than give the opposition a chance to attack our makeshift defence. The players listed could in theory support a high pressing game.

Defence through possession is probably a good plan (a page out of AVB's tactics manual). I haven't totally given up on Paulinho but he is in Rio (in his head) and shouldn't be any where near a Spurs team for the rest of the season IMO.

I find it slightly ironic that YTS (through his incompetence) is doing what I was begging AVB to do all season and ditching us out of the UEFA. Only problem is, he's done it a game too late.

The only reason I would go for Paulinho is that in a system where he spends more time in the final third near the striker he actually looks comfortable. He pressures the opposition well high up the pitch and we don't need to worry too much about him *****ing out of the risky 50/50 tackles in front of our defence. So far he has failed to impress me when deployed centrally in a 442 or as the #10 in a 4411, but as one of two players near the top of a diamond I think he could work out. All width would have to come from the fullbacks mind.

-------------Soldado------------------
--------Eriksen----Paulinho------------
Rose---Dembele---Bentaleb------Walker
-------------Sandro-------------------

Something like this but with Paulinho and Eriksen alternating as to who drops deep and who runs off.

Interesting write up of the first leg and a Q&A with a Portuguese footballer blogger on WindyCOYS

http://windycoys.com/2014/03/benfica-focus/

"They struck me as a team lacking a clear idea of what they should be doing. Player for player the two sides are probably quite well matched. Players like Eriksen, Paulinho, Lennon and Adebayor are exactly the type of players Jorge Jesus likes to work with, but there was no discernable pattern to Tottenham’s play, and when that happens a player can only shine through an individual moment of inspiration – like Eriksen’s beautiful goal. Jorge Jesus almost always gets the very best out of his players, but overall you got the feeling Tottenham’s lack of cohesion was preventing their most talented players from showing their best. The individuals were working for the team but the team wasn’t working for the individuals."

Amazing how somebody looking from the outside in seemed to hit the tickle my balls with a feather just by seeing us once.

I am not buying any of this Lennon or Paulinho is sh*t nonsense. Everyone of our squad has shown at some point in their career they have played well as part of a well drilled unit. I'm not judging anyone based on this season. It truly is a write off to me. I would love to see what a coach like Wenger could do with this team.

We have appeared to be an utter shambles in terms of a pattern of play all season.

Yeah, that rang true for me too. I thought that the bit where he talks about Jorge Jesus changing their still of play this season was interesting too.

That article and comment from the Benfica man were very insightful and goes to the heart of what type of manager Tim had set out to be judging by the games he's been in charge of- but that's another thread.

I really can't see us getting anything from this game given our supposed injury list. Our only hope of not getting to led is if JJ puts out a second string against us- with no fit centre backs it could be carnage- the beast is not suited to playing there and I'm struggling to think who else could?

Surely Veljkovic will get a run out? I'd rather have a rookie whose position is centre back rather than someone whose literally never played in that position before.

Kind of glad I couldn't make this game. It's going to be a very painful experience.

We've got to hope that Benfica rest most of their first eleven or I can see us losing by three, four, maybe even five.

As for team selection, we've little to play for in the league so put as strong as possible team out and hope for the best, but really we have no chance.

yep, AVBs pattern of play was too cautious and lacking creativity in the final 3rd, and Sherwoods pattern of play doesnt even exist

Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood says he has "no respect" for his Benfica counterpart Jorge Jesus.

Sherwood and Jesus were involved in an altercation during the first leg of the Europa League tie between the clubs last week at White Hart Lane, which Benfica won 3-1.

Jesus celebrated Benfica's third goal exuberantly and angered Sherwood by apparently waving three fingers in his direction.

The duo did not shake hands at the end of the match but they will meet again on Thursday, when Benfica host Spurs in the second-leg of the tie.

Sherwood remains unhappy with Jesus and said: "I know exactly where he was coming from and I know what I saw.

"I have got no respect for the man. I've got respect for the football club and I've got respect for his players.

"The club is a huge club and we've had a lot of emails from Benfica fans apologising for their manager's behaviour. At the end of the day, I will shake his hand, because they are a giant of a club."

Jesus blames closeness of the benches

Jesus said he hopes himself and Sherwood can put the incident behind them.

"We won't run away from the question, it happened," he said. "It is normal, as the benches were close together.

"A lot of coaches in England have similar problems and I did not disrespect the coach.

"Other coaches have had similar problems like (Sir Alex) Ferguson, (Roberto) Mancini and (Manuel) Pellegrini. It is normal because the benches are too close together.

"What is important here is that we're not going to start trying to get in more problems. It is water under the bridge.

"We had a good game in London and we want to do another one here."

Injuries mount up for Spurs

Tottenham clearly have it all to do if they are to advance and Sherwood revealed that they are short of numbers due to injury.

"We are struggling," he said on Wednesday. "We have a lot of injuries, unfortunately.

"We are going to have to leave a lot of bodies behind and go with a few kids.

"(Emmanuel) Adebayor will be missing, as he has a hamstring problem.

"Younes Kaboul had the fitness test before the game at Arsenal and he just managed to crawl over the line, so he won't be fit. So that's two very important players for us.

"Jan Vertonghen is obviously suspended so, in the centre back area, we need to conjure up something.

"Paulinho is going to be struggling, he has pulled out of training this morning with a calf problem. We are going to assess it tomorrow."
