The Fight to Qualify for the European Conference League 2020/21

So into the Conference League it is. Well... In the long run this may well be important, because from 2024 the two clubs who are not in the CL on merit, through league, cups or EL, but with the highest coefficient in European games will get the final spots for the CL. We are now 15th in that list, so that could well be us if we continue to pick up some points in the next two seasons. Points for wins/draws etc. is the same as in CL and EL.

See here: https://kassiesa.net/uefa/seedecl2021.html for the early list of pariticipants and seeding.

We enter in the play-off round (H and A), on Aug 19/26, so that isn't too bad. The opposition looks overwhemingly unfashionable, with many teams like Plovdiv and LASK, although the really bad ones will have been eliminated before we enter.

Bottom line: it's not very cheerful, but it's better than nothing.

The dates for the Conference next season.

Play off round. Yes seriously. No one goes straight into the groups!
19 August and 26 August

Group stage (8 groups of 4)
Matchday 1 16 September
Matchday 2 30 September
Matchday 3 21 October
Matchday 4 4 November
Matchday 5 25 November
Matchday 6 9 December

Round of 16: 10 March and 17 March
Quarter-finals : 7 April and 14 April
Semi-finals: 28 April and 5 May
Final: 25 May

If we don't top our group there is an extra round of 32. Where the 2nd place teams play the teams eliminated from the Europa League proper.

Mourinho's Roma will be in it.

Prefer Potter especially if he is coming with Bissouma
I’m not sure it works like that unfortunately. I’m sure I read that Liverpool want Bissouma, I suspect he’ll choose to go to them.

I’m extremely wary of taking on a manager who has just had his team limp into a 16th place finish despite spending a fair old amount of money.

Yes, this is the key and why its important. Grow a new team over the next couple years and then maybe make the CL by the back door if we dont qualify

Also need to remember that if we make £20m-£40m say from this, thats a new player

If the same rules would apply this year, Arsenal and Roma would get into the CL, regardless of where they finished in PL/Serie A, unless Juve miss out on 4th place (then Roma would not 'qualify'). We are currently the third/fourth team in the coefficient-list not to qualify for the CL. So we should use the Conference League to (at the very least) jump over Arsenal, who have 11 points more than we do (i.e. 5 wins and a draw in the Conference League).

Completely. We'll be above Arsenal during next season when the 5th last season drops out and the 2021/2 is included

I think you still have to qualify for Europe to be one of the 2 getting into the CL so Arsenal wouldn't have got it this season.

Not a glamourous competition but it's one we could win and at least gives the opportunity for some younger and back up players to get game time and who knows maybe a few decent away days as well.

It's going to add another schizophrenic dimension to the latter stages of the season: today, Arse v. Brighton for some time appeared more important than our own game at Leicester - I was convinced we were going to lose anyway. But come April 2024, we will be rooting for, say, Roma to beat Udinese or Sassuolo to become third in Serie A to qualify for the CL on merit, because that could mean the difference for us between being in the CL and not being in Europe at all.

This coefficient back door thing will be abolished before then.
It will never see the light of day.

They've already decided on it: https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl...-1000--new-champions-league-format-explained/
But P. D. is right. You have to qualify at least for ECL to 'earn' one of the two coefficient spots.

If this scenario would have been in place this year, we would be praying for a Juve win at Bologna this evening, because it would mean the difference between Conference League or Champions League. Assuming that Roma do not lose at Spezia of course, because if they do, we would be in the Champions League regardless of the Juve game.

Also if we do get into that cl format, it will boost our coefficients again. Meaning we will keep on qualifying for it. Incredibly important to do well in europe the next few years.
Oops arsenal.

Just had a peek at the Euro Conference Wiki page.
Teams in this with us:
Villareal, Rubin Kazan, Feyenoord, Basel,CSKA Sofia

and some recent familiar foes:
Gent,PAOK,Astana,Maribor,Qarabag,Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

Plus there will be a fair few dropouts from the Europa league. Could still be some tasty ties in this comp

Think Betis took the Spanish place and a goal in the last 5 minutes got Roma into it. Hello Jose:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Tottenham, Union Berlin, Roma, Betis and Rennes are the top 5 leagues single entrants.

Wow, I was pretty down on the Conference League before reading this. Glad we’re in it! Mason masterclass!
