The Fight to Qualify for the European Conference League 2020/21

The reason we aren't top of the league now isn't because we lost away to Liverpool, it's because we dropped silly points against weaker opposition - that is something well within our capability to resolve.
Surely it's both seeing as we would still be top had we drawn against Liverpool.

Had we been top the "reason" would have been that Liverpool dropped silly points against weaker opposition.
It's why i get frustrated seeing us overly protective of slender leads or too cautious when playing weaker teams - one moment switching off and it can be costly.
Our approach so far has gotten us to where we are. I agree that we need to improve, but it's not like other approaches don't have that risk of dropping "silly" points.

Liverpool have single goal wins against several teams, just like us. Games that could have gone differently, just like for us.

Last season when winning the league they had loads of single goal wins. Being able to see out those games, see out those wins, is extremely important. They take a different approach, but not an inherently better one, definitely not regardless of the squad and manager.

It was a post in response to the idea that has cropped up since the game on Wednesday that because we lost away to Liverpool that means we aren't able to win the league - it obviously wasn't meant in a literal sense.

We just need to be a bit more ruthless in games once we're already winning, which is something within our ability to do, once we find a better balance between protecting a lead and increasing the lead then it doesn't matter that beating a side like Liverpool away from home was beyond us.

And pool have had a lot of draws away from home against sides you would have them as bankers against...

Sure, and I agree. But all points count equally and a draw against Liverpool could have been worth more than turning the Palace game into a win.

Anyone claiming now to know what the season will bring aren't making sense.

Is it usually this close at this stage of the season?

hoping we can put some daylight between us and 5th through the Christmas period, although it feels like we had a good start looks like there could be a wider scrap for top 4 than usual and we could be 6th after the next round of results with city having a game in hand to go above us. That said we will have played the top 8 plus Goons so hopefully that will count for something.

There's usually bigger gaps between the sides at the top by this stage
There are normally 18 games played by Xmas and gaps start to appear around that stage. Maybe you are talking about after 14 games, not sure what the table normally looks like by that stage

We're still in a good position to compete for top four, which was realistically our best hope for the league this season.

I saw something comparing the table at this stage (games played) to the last couple of seasons and there was a clear difference. Can't find it now

This for me as well, i can not believe that anyone could seriously believe we would win it. Said it many times on here we are a work in progress and this result shows we still have a way to go.

I have to admit I was getting carried away (year ending in one and all that), but from the state we were in last year, top four would be a proper step up this season.

I really hope we manage to string a good cup run together and win a trophy though.

I do believe we have a good chance of winning a cup this season but the title is a pipe dream ( imo)

For me, it’s as much that everyone else is really really brick, and managed by an incompetent*, as it is that we have a great manager and a strong squad.

*Everton aside.
