A quick recap of what we are doing

Right. It's time to stop moping and choose the best Spurs team of the Premier League era.

We'll have a different thread for each position over the coming weeks. The thread will be open for a while for nominations and the most frequently mentioned players will be going into a poll on the same thread.

The only criteria to be nominated is that the player must have played for Spurs in the Premier League.

The team will line up 4-2-3-1.

Reminiscing about favourite players past and present is encouraged.

Anyone who comes into the thread, doesn't read what we're doing and posts their full best team of all time, gets laughed at.

Third and fourth positions up - centre back. We'll take both positions together and have two votes each when the time comes.

Have a chat and come up with but nominations, make a case for who you think is best. A poll will be added when it looks like we have a few players to pick between.

Can I just say that regardless of his ability, that bellend who now fancies himself as some sort of politician should not be mentioned in the poll.

Only real discussion is whether it's Woodgate or Alderweireld to go alongside King.

Mabbutt has to be in the poll imo

Three stand out based on their play: Mabbutt, Campbell and King. I think Mabbutt played through to 1996, but I was abroad and saw little of Spurs in the 90s (some reports suggest I was lucky).

Alderweireld could well be one of the greats, but he has had one season. If he stays long enough, I'd be happy to count him in, but not now.

I kind of agree but in his one season Alderweireld has played 38 PL games and is only 11 games of playing what Woodgate did for us so you could argue that he deserves to be in the poll if Woodgate is.

Regardless I feel I'd vote King & Woodgate. Such a shame that two of the best defenders of our generation were so injury prone.

Can I suggest including Gallas in the poll? I didn't want him at all when he arrived but his experience and displays were outstanding. His display against AC Milan alone was phenemoneal and one of my favourite memories as a Spurs fan is seeing him captaining the team against Arsenal at the Emirates and leading us to victory.

He really won me over and I didn't expect that.

The names in the frame so far:

King
Mabbutt
Woodgate
Alderweireld
Naybet
Gallas

Is there anyone that we are missing? Dawson? Vertonghen? Calderwood? Bassong? Ruddock?

Vertonghen in his first season was far far better than anything from Naybet and even in his weaker second season he was ok. So is Naybet is included Verts should be as well

I think that Naybet was pretty instrumental in bringing King through. King was certainly good before him but he became a leader through playing alongside him.

I have no arguments about including Verts in the poll though.

Daws has his detractors but for my money deserves at least to be on the list because alongside King he was often outstanding. And though more error prone without him by Ghod he always played his heart out for us. Fans focussed too much on his mistakes and failed to credit him sufficiently for his frequent heroics in somehow getting something in the way at the last minute.
