The best Spurs team of all time - central midfield

Who are the best central midfielders to play for Spurs

  • Total voters
    58
  • Poll closed .
He was not my pick for RB but he did play a lot of games there so to say he was just a M/F is wrong.

i'm not saying he was, but it wasn't his best position and there seemed to be a consensus that he was put there to get him in rather than him being the best RB we have ever had

Has to be Mackay and Blanchflower, with Hoddle playing further forward with Gazza and A.N.Other, behind Greaves.

Because we did the midfield first, we are going to end up with Hoddle there. If we had done the 'three' first, Hoddle would have ended up there. So we need to combine these 5 positions IMO or it will skew the vote.
Bang on.

From what i have heard from supporters who have watched both in their prime Gazza wasn't in the same league as Hoddle so i would expect that to have been reflected in this poll had he been included - although i guess there will be plenty on here of the age where they would have seen Gazza in his prime but not Hoddle so maybe that may have run it closer

What I was getting at is the younger voters would have picked Gazza and Hoddle so Mackay misses out.

Yes, I was thinking that. The order of the vote can have a big influence. I suspect if we had go from the front we would have had Hoddle picked before picking the half-backs, which would have left Modric and Blanchflower fighting it out. Then some might have left out Mackay hoping to get him in as a CB.

The downside of not putting Hoddle as a half back would have been to restrict the quarterback line choices. Now we will have an extra choice. Even so, the three slots will need to consider #10 type playmakers/creative inside forwards (Gazza, White), goalscoring inside forwards/second strikers (Peters, Sheringham) and wingers (Jones, Waddle, Ginola, Bale). Given I was going to pick Hoddle here, I am saved a really tough choice.

That said, the fun of the thread is discussion of different view points. If we had consensus it would be over and done quickly.

I would like to suggest an extra category for homourable mention: special partnerships. Some players alone are not good enough for selection, but with another player were part of special partnerships. Archibald and Crooks is one that comes to mind for us where neither will be close to selection as centre-forward, but the partnership was special. Others could include Blanchflower-Mackay, Sheringham-Klinsmann, Carrick-Davids (although shortlived), Keane-Berbatov, King-Dawson, and so on.

I'm going to run separate polls for the three positions behind the striker; RWF, #10/AM, LWF. There should be some interesting discussions because we will have attacking midfielders up against support strikers and all number of permeations for the wide players.

in AS's absence can I suggest we leave it open for the Wonky

I agree...we could even have a bench of 7, in which some of those who came close, or were not considered to be shortlisted can be put forward.
Those you mentioned above and the likes of Allen, Anderton, Carrick etc

IIRC Davids played LM, while Jenas was in the centre with Carrick

Generally been staying out of this one... But the Modric-Huddlestone partnership was a thing of beauty, though because of Hudd's injury problems I think we only got to see it around 10 times.

You are just like Sven!

Pick the system. Then the players. Not the other way around.
How dare you! I never touched Ulrika Jonsson.

Anyway, I disagree, we need to get the best players in, they will make their own system work, they are good enough. Blanchflower and Mackay were the on-field managers, don't forget, they would make it work and murderise the opposition with total football, 18-0

How are you going to choose the order? If you go right to left, we could get a shootout between Jones and Bale. If we go le

Some of the time that was so. That season we mostly had a midfield of four from ...

Lennon, Jenas, Carrick, Davids, Tainio, Reid

.. and it was almost always picked first four from the right side of midfield. If everyone was fit it was Lennon, Jenas, Carrick, and Davids on the left, as you suggest. But for much of the season Lennon was injured so Jenas shifted right, Davids came into the middle, and Tainio came in on the left. Iirc, Tainio player a lot of games on the left, although some would have been while Davids was injured, You are right that the Carrick-Davids midfield wasn't that frequent, but it stuck in the memory for me.

It was a very unusual season for selection to have such a simple pattern. With two injured, Reid came in on the left, with Davids or Tainio in the centre. Carrick only missed three games, with Mendes replacing him, and that unfortunately led to Mendes leaving and our hole when Carrick left.

Why is David Howells in the poll and not Gazza?

Should really have done this one as two separate categories for DM (not that we've had that many good ones TBH) and a playmaker.

Anyway. If I can't vote for Tom Huddlestone and Didier Zokora I'll go for Modric, as I'm too young to have seen Hoddle or Ardiles, and Modric made a team that featured Peter Crouch, Wilson Palacios, Didier Zokora, David Bentley and co play some of the best football in the league before leaving to win the Champions League with Real Madrid. This season has been much improved on the last few years but I still don't think we're as good to watch as we were when that little genius was in the middle.

I don't get this "I'm too young to have seen X/Y/Z" business. This is an all-time XI. I'm too young to have seen World War II, but I know that when it comes to mental dictators, Hitler would make the all-time XI.

I find it difficult to pick a player based on what is essentially hearsay, regardless of how good they may or may not have been.

By and large I have been staying out of voting because the vast majority of players which I have seen in my lifetime have been utter toss!

I think that it is with Modric that a line is created to determine whether we are judging the most talented players for us, or those that made the largest contribution over the years. The two can differ. Modric was so skilful. I loved that he rarely lost possession and that he helped to make the team play better as a whole. But, sadly, he didn't make as big a contribution as others as his stay at the club wasn't for as long as some of the others.
