Is there abyone that we should add to this short list?

Hoddle
Mackay
Ardiles
Blanchflower
Burgess
Modric
White
Carrick

Gazza (like Hoddle, if he doesn't make it on this one he could also get in the attacking midfield position).

I think that the team would look very unbalanced with Gazza at the base of midfield in a 4-2-3-1. It would kinda undermine the whole point of having two midfielders sitting.

No way Hoddle can be left out of this team but I won't be voting for him as a DM, in my book that would be a criminal waste of his talents. There is a case of sorts I suppose given his sublime passing skills but in other respects he would probably have been a liability in that position as tackling was never his strongest suit.

He has to go somewhere in CM for me, probably right side or central where he can work his magic to best effect opening up the opposition defence. Don't forget he was also quite a prolific goalscorer for a midfielder, scoring 132 goals in 590 appearances, approximately one every four games. Would never get near that return from DM imho.

We're playing a double pivot ;)

@milo Whilst I agree with you re. balance of the team, if Hoddle is on the list for this position then Gazza also should be too, imo.

I'm happy to go with a majority decision (or enough noise to convince me that there is some support for it). :)

Gazza played CM in a 4-4-2 for most of his time with us (with 2 of Lineker, Stewart or Walsh up top).

It was only in his last season that Stewart converted to DM and Gascoigne pushed a bit further forwards.

He needs to be in the CM mix for me

John White was an inside right, very much an attacking midfielder, similar in certain respects to Eriksen. Though classy in everything he did he was a bit of a lightweight so I'm not sure - in fact I'm certain - that a berth in front of the back four would not be right for 'The Ghost of White Hart Lane.'

I think that you are right. He should be fighting it out for the inside forward slots

Is the list then?

Hoddle
Mackay
Ardiles
Blanchflower
Burgess
Modric
Carrick
Howells
Gascoigne

Or do we drop both Hoddle and Gascoigne and put them in the mix for the three behind Greaves?

@milo for me, gazza and hoddle will be battling for a place in the 3 behind greaves, but a lot of posters want one (or both) of them in the 'two' so I think they should be on this list.

A difficult question. With Hoddle and Gazza in the mix, its likely that Blanchflower will miss out and possibly even Mackay. Take them out and the votes will be different. So the choice will impact the decision.

While I think Hoddle should be considered further forward, many in this thread are picking him for CM. A Hoddle-Mackay partnership with Hoddle pushing forward seems a viable option. The case for Gazza is weaker.

For those who never saw Hoddle play take a look at the videos about him. Most of his best passes were from within his own half, ask Crooks, Archibald etc and they will tell you it was his long balls/passes from deep that allowed them to score so many goals.
