Summer 2018 transfer thread

He's not Zaha, but I think we should take a punt on Kevin Volland, from Bayer Leverkusen. He plays in the same sort of wing forward/centre-forward role that Zaha does, so he has that versatility (and thus would see more playing time than if he were just the backup to Kane). He's doing relatively well this season - 14 goals and 2 assists in 28 games, which is comfortably more than what Zaha's managed. And, perhaps most importantly, he wouldn't cost 50m - maybe half that.

The last inside forward we bought from Bayer Leverkusen's turned out okay. So did the striker we bought from them before that, actually. :p So maybe we'll be lucky a third time as well.

I would suggest it is rather unfair to compare the stats of Zaha and Volland when one plays for a poor team that ha been battling relegation all season while the other is in a team third in the league.

Sure, but alternately, the player battling away against relegation with a poor team might not be worth double what Volland would (likely) cost. You're right in that the stats don't tell the whole story, though.

Never heard of him until I read this

Stats look good though if that’s anything to judge a player on

QUOTE="Bedfordspurs, post: 1042351, member: 150"]Ward prowse could be brilliant at the right club[/QUOTE]

In what position? He's often looks good on the ball but I've never been convinced he's quite creative enough to be anything more than a squad filler at a bigger club

If you want to push forward players like ward prowse are not the solution.

Players that we should be targeting are those that have big potential or those that could get into a top four team

Tottenham and Arsenal among chasing pack for Norwich's James Maddison

17 APRIL 2018 • 10:30PM

James Maddison, the highly rated young Norwich City attacking midfielder, is at the centre of a tug of war between six Premier League clubs for his signature.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the country’s most promising talents after impressing for Norwich this season en route to being named in the PFA Championship team of the year.

Maddison, who has scored 15 goals for Norwich this term, including a hat-trick in a 4-3 win at Hull City last month, is valued at around £25 million and is attracting interest from a host of top flight clubs.

Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and newly crowned Premier League champions Emirates Marketing Project are jostling for his signature. But Southampton and Brighton are also believed to be in the hunt for Maddison, even if their prospects could be damaged if either club suffer relegation to the Championship this season.

Maddison’s preference would ideally be to join a club where he has a realistic chance of regular first team football.

Norwich are keen to keep hold of Maddison, who signed a new deal with the club last June that ties him to Carrow Road until 2021. But the club have missed out on a play-off spot that could keep make it harder to keep hold of him while the prospect of clubs entering a bidding war for the player could tempt Norwich to cash in.

Maddison joined Norwich from Coventry in February 2016 and and has won three England Under-21 caps.

Luke Shaw to assess Man United future, has yet to make decision - sources

MANCHESTER, England -- Luke Shaw is yet to make a firm decision about his future at Manchester United and will assess his options this summer, sources have told ESPN FC.

Shaw was fully fit for West Bromwich Albion's visit to Old Trafford on Sunday but was left out of the 18-man squad by manager Jose Mourinho.

The left-back was also omitted from the matchday squad for the victory over Emirates Marketing Project at the Etihad Stadium.

He has not featured since being substituted at half-time during the 2-0 win over Brighton in the fifth round of the FA Cup on March 17.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Shaw's continued struggle to win over Mourinho will prompt the defender to consider his future at the end of the season, although he has not ruled out staying.

United have triggered a one-year extension in his contract that could keep him at the club until 2019.

Mourinho suggested in February that Shaw, 22, would sign a longer deal, but sources have told ESPN FC that is yet to materialise.

Shaw, signed from Southampton for close to £30 million in 2014, has fallen behind Ashley Young while United have been looking at other left-backs ahead of the summer transfer window.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Mourinho is interested in Tottenham Hotspur's Danny Rose, Juventus' Alex Sandro and Celtic's Kieran Tierney.

Marcel Bout, head of global scouting, has attended Celtic games specifically to watch Tierney.

Shaw has been left frustrated by a lack of opportunities this season that has effectively cost him the chance of going to the World Cup with England.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Shaw believed he had a chance of being selected for friendlies against Netherlands and Italy last month after a run of eight starts in 11 games for United through January and February, but he was omitted by manager Gareth Southgate -- a fan of Shaw -- in favour of Rose, Young and Ryan Bertrand.

Shaw has not played a single minute of first-team football since the international break and has been left relying on injuries to other squad members to secure a seat on the plane to Russia.

ARSENAL sent spies to check out Andrija Zivkovic in Porto's 1-0 win at Benfica, according to reports.

A host of Premier League clubs had representatives looking at targets in Sunday's top-of-the-table Primeira Liga clash.

Manchester United, Everton, Leicester, Liverpool, West Ham, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Southampton and Swansea all had scouts at the game.

And Portuguese title O Jogo say that the Gunners scout was taking a closer look at Benfica's Serbian winger Zivkovic.

The tricky international joined from Partizan in 2016 and has made himself a regular starter in the Eagles side this season.

Zivkovic, 21, has also been linked with a move to United, who sent two scouts to the game and who he came on against in a 1-0 home Champions League defeat in October.

O Jogo claim that West Ham were present at the game to watch Benfica's Mexican striker Raul Jiminez.

Benfica full-back Andre Almeida was apparently being watched by Leicester, with Everton taking notes on Porto striker Moussa Marega.

Spurs were said to have been scouting Porto's Ricardo Pereira during the clash.

Hector Herrera's strike won the game in the 90th minute as Porto hurdled Benfica to move two points clear at the top of the table.

Tottenham have 'massive advantage' in transfer window change - Mauricio Pochettino

LONDON -- Mauricio Pochettino has said the shortened summer transfer window will be a "a massive advantage" to Tottenham's hopes of making a fast start to next season and challenging for the Premier League title.

Last year, Spurs were among the 14 Premier League clubs to vote in favour of closing the transfer window before the start of the domestic season, and this summer, clubs will have until Aug. 9 to complete their business -- two days before the new campaign begins.

Spurs have traditionally left their business late, and last summer, all five signings joined in the final week of the window -- contributing to another sluggish start to the season and leaving Pochettino's side playing catch-up again.

Pochettino has said Spurs must make a fast start if they are to beat new champions Emirates Marketing Project to next season's league title and, while he suggested the club would continue to leave their business late, the manager hopes the shorter window will ensure his team can hit the ground running.

"It's a massive advantage for us for [the transfer window] to finish before the start of the season," Pochettino said ahead of Tottenham's trip to Brighton on Tuesday. "For us, it's massive. It's fantastic because now it's before the start of the season -- not one month later. Of course, for many clubs, it will not change too much, but for us, it is going to change a lot. We're going to have the squad ready before the start of the season. If we want new players, they need to arrive before the start of the season.

"They're going to have more time to adapt before the start of the season and help the team. You're going to win an extra month with them and it's massive. We don't need to wait for anything. You need today -- or yesterday -- to start to work to try to sign players. It's going to be very helpful for Tottenham."

Spurs will announce their fixtures for a second consecutive preseason trip the United States on Tuesday, with the club scheduled to play in the International Champions Cup in late July again.

Their first friendly is expected to be within two weeks of the World Cup final on July 15, further complicating the club's summer transfer plans.

Pochettino said another trip to the U.S. will help this side make the fast start he wants.

"All the big clubs are doing the tour in America, China, Asia or Australia," Pochettino said. "It's no different from another club. I was talking about preparing the team better and to be ready to compete from day one of the competition. That is the most important thing."

Re Maddison - i read a post from a spurs fan elsewhere who watches Norwich regularly and he reckons he's more of an Alli than an Eriksen, not that it's all that important just that there's been a lot of talk that he's a potential alternative playmaker so just throwing it out there...

Suffice to say I know nothing about Volland so I could not possibly comment
