Squad

The question is do we buy a 29-30 year old experienced head to add to squad?
I don't think it's necessary. If we want to buy an experienced head a 26-28 could well full that requirement based on their own experience.

We really have a lot of potential in our squad:

Mike Moore 17

Lucas Bergvall 18

Archie Gray 18

Yang Min-hyeok 18

Wilson Odbert 19

Antonin Kinsky 21

Destiny Udogie 22

Pape Matar Sarr 22

Radu Drăgușin 22

Micky van de Ven 23

Brennan Johnson 23

Djed Spence 24

Dejan Kulusevski 24

And that list does not include any of the young players out on loan
And I also forgot Lankshear from the list, he is just 19 too.

Given we have Bergvall Gray & Sarr in CM positions already i think we might be in for a 'Solanke' profile player in the summer for CM if we can shift one of Bentancur or Bissouma

I think we'll keep Ben Davies around for that very reason.

I do think the constant hamstring injuries with Davies are food for thought. 4 consecutive seasons now.

I'm thinking of a scenario where Phillips and Vuskovic form a quintet of centre halves along with the senior 3.

Just thinking aloud with first teamers / seniors and backups and backups to the backups and loans and stuff... not a bad squad for the future eh, not including all the kids bubbling up like Hall Ajayi Olusesi Williams-Barnett etc

Yeah, we'd all like a left back instead of Reggie and for Werner to go home and a more defensive minded midfielder, but we can't have everything...

Vicario
(Kinsky)
((Austin/Forster/Whiteman))

Porro Romero VdV Udogie
(Dragusin Danso Davies Spence)
((Phillips Dorrington Vuskovic Reggie))

Biss Bentancur Sarr Gray
Deki Maddison Bergvall
((Devine Donley))

Johnson Solanke Tel Richie Son
(Moore Odobert Yang Werner)
((Scarlett Lankshear))

Its RWF were are weakest - Johnson is the only one of our wide forwards who is naturally better on that side. Tel, Odobert, Moore and Son will all naturally turn away from goal to the byline and away from danger

So we have brought in 3 highly rated youngsters this window from City, Liverpool amd Chelsea. Some work going into the academy

Since the start of the season when Gray and Bergvall weren't quite seen as ready for much PL action we're in a much stronger position now with our squad.

Gray and Bergvall bona fide first team squad members, starting and playing well in successive games. Added Kinsky, Danso and Tel. Spence gone from an option, someone with quite a lot of uncertainty around him to at least competing with Udogie and Porro imo. Moore getting some PL minutes and at least an option for some game time.

Said it before, but it's even more true now after the transfer window. Give this squad a reset with regards to injuries and fitness and it's looking a rather strong squad. We don't get that mid season of course, but a lot of good work that's gone into this that I believe will pay off sooner or later.

Still work to be done (will always be the case), but the number of fixes we need is decreasing.

When all of our players are fit, what would our best XI be?

For me: Vic, Porro, VDV, Romero, Spence, Bissouma, Kulusevski, Maddison, Son, Solanke, Johnson.

Although, I honestly don't rate Bissouma anymore, Son has lost his speed, Maddison is very hot or cold, and although Johnson is a great contributor, I just don't ... I don't know why, but feel like he's upgradable as well.

So that's four players we could upgrade in my opinion. Meaning, our main absentees at present, in my opinion, are VDV, Romero, Solanke and Vic. I think there's a lot of room for improvement in this team. After this transfer window, we need to bolster that midfield with a 6. Getting a proper 6 in for Bissouma has got to be our main priority in the summer.

I quiet like this, feels a nice balance

Vicario
Spence Romero VDV Udogie
Bissouma Gray
Kulusevski
Odobert Solanki Tel
Close call on Johnson and Odobert. But Odobert and Tel have the pace and willing to take players on.

Would like to see an upgrade on Bissouma to a top quality 6. Gray given a chance and play like he has at the back, just now protecting them.

I would also like to see Kinsky in that team as well. See how he does with a proper defence in front of him.

Protecting the back four? ! ? ! Now there's an idea. How easy it was for Villa to be able to run at the back four after bypassing an uncoordinated press with one pass was insane tonight.

I don't see any combination of the current midfield crop working out, it does not matter who plays there atm, it's just about keeping people as fresh as possible with the chopping and changing. No real tactical advantage / benefit to playing a Biss instead of a Bentancur, or a Sarr over a bergvall, they'll run around and foul people a lot, consistency of a sort....Gray in there is a different proposition even if it's possibly still too early, but obviously requires us having fit CBs.

Gray sitting in front of a back four with Bergvall in front of him acting as the cover and link to kulu is a very exciting prospect.

With Gray as the DM, any of Bergvall, Sarr or Bentancur would look much better as the other part of the double pivot.

Isn't that a leap of faith though? Just because Gray has done OK in the back line doesn't automatically mean he's ready for a critical centre midfield role. It's not that he's smashed it at full-back either and he's made some errors in key moments at centre half.

I'm sure he's destined for greatness but I think we need to be very careful with him.

Personally, as Romero/VDV return I'd like to see him withdrawn from the team and used sensibly from the bench. We don't want another Sess on our hands.

Absolutely. It's a role he may end up being great in, but until we actually see him play there regularly no way to know how well he will do there now.

Him getting a bit of a rest makes a lot of sense to me. Will get a bit of that anyway now with a couple of weeks with just one game, so who knows. Some of the performances of our other midfielders recently sure makes going for the untested Gray in that role seem like an attractive option right now though.
