Squad

I think we will need more from a 6. Put it this way, I don't see any of the big guns pushing to sign him in the summer.

Would they be though with that arrangement in place with Spurs?

This deal confuses me. I don't know whether Spurs vested interests are for the player or the sell-on money in the Gio deal.

A La Liga average score on WhoScored of 6.85 is pretty good for a 23 year old. Better than Bergval and we rate him.

I think your wrong
I saw the Betis vs Madrid game and he really stood out and bossed the midfield

I imagine he's a bit like Hojbjerg but with way more physical qualities like speed across the deck. Not short of a decent football brain with some leadership qualities. Never gonna be a world beater.

I think having a great 6 is desirable for any team BUT we have zero idea who will be the manager and what the system will be come August

Albeit I am not a fan of assumptions, the smart money has to be on a manager who at least plays with the same 'attack minded' philosophy? To your point, that can be achieved a number of ways system-wise.

That deal only has a two week window as I understand it?

Yep, 30 Jun to 10 Jul as I understand it. So the 3 options are put the deal in the 24/25 fiscal year, 25/26 fiscal year or don't do it the deal at all.

I'm sure that will send smoke signals to the people that understand our accounts way better than I do.

Its not good to bind the new managers hand spending a big chunk of his summer pot before he's had a chance to assess his players. Especially when its not going on an outstanding young talent (a Gray or a Dibling).

Imagine if the new coach rocks up and finds 2/3rds of his funds have already been spent on Tel and Cardosa.

@Bedfordspurs @Lilbaz interesting to see The Athletic publish this piece literally hours ago!!!! Their breakdown essentially backs up what Bedford says in the sense of him being a ball-winner, and what I've said about him not being special enough to be a difference-maker. I believe he would be a 'cheaper punt' option in a position we need to take very seriously. There again, at 23, he fits the profile of player we are looking to bring in. Let's see...I'll hold my hand up and say I was wrong if he's bossing it here this time next year.

yeah agree, cheap option and something we are lacking now. maddison does it but not enough.

can cardoso adapt to angeball? we build up slowly pushing CBs to the centre circle and then push fullbacks up until we have 5 in a line attack. Consequently the defending team drops back rightfully to crowd out the space in front of the penalty box, where players are 3-10m from each other, making pin point passing difficult

the last part describes his shortcoming - a bit of romero losing the ball due to overconfidence and a bit of not tracking back is interesting too, but can be coached.

yes codosa, yes to a new coach who knows how to create space for our very exciting attacking potential

This for me is the Solanke argument. It was the data model that had been developed that made him our number 1 target. He didn't look as attractive as Toney or other strikers abroad and had only really had one standout season in the PL at 26 years old. Has that data model worked with Solanke? Arguably yes, but he still has things to prove in my mind.

So Ange leaves and we have a sighter for who takes over. The data model is adjusted around their tactical system and then we find out whether Tel and Cardoso fit in the grand scheme of things. At the same, we have to make sure the new manager is in situ for the start of pre-season (Jul 1st) which lines up with the Cardoso clause. If you believe what we read, all managers have the final say.

Personally, I really don't want to see major surgery on this squad. If we don't get UEFA football then we should expect that reduced budget anyway. What we need is a new manager optimising the squad and a couple of key additions. If we win the EL, then we should party all assumer as we're back on track.
