Son Heung-Min

One pundit tonight on the radio commentary (might have been Jenas but wasn't paying enough attention) actually surprised me by saying it out loud that he loves Son but watching him nowadays is sad to see, that he is not the same player anymore etc. He then said Simon Jordan mentioned recently that the he was told by people at the club that they were concerned that Son didn't seem to be able to recover very quickly from his surgery during the Summer and how he hasn't been able to regain his form from previous seasons etc.

Matches what I heard to be honest that he has been carrying a thigh problem all season

His finishing is absolute dogbrick this season, especially recently, and that was always one of his huge strengths.

His pace and quickness of feet made him special and that was always likely to go first but I can’t understand how he’s dropped off so much in front of goal.

It is sad to see. I absolutely love the guy but he’s a passenger at the moment. I wonder is he playing through an injury.

He isn’t injured but he is tired
But he also is scared of contact
He hates anyone getting close to him to “hurt” him and it’s so so frustrating to see
Now he has mastered this marking space thing too
I’m glad that the media have picked up on it now

I think Its about time we accepted that he adds nothing as a starter anymore, use him as a impact sub and lets see if he can regain some form. There is no doubt he has been a great player for us but he must know that for whatever reasons he has not shown enough. Said it before but making him capt was a mistake by Ange.

Huge error of judgement
The guy is a legend but didn’t mean he can be a leader
And people have to stop talking about what he could do and look at what he is doing now

He's a 6ft coward. Has always been a completely scaredy cat.

It's taken the media a decade.

Errr...do you wish to offer any context to that statement? You're talking about a man who had to play, and win, a match to avoid three years of compulsorary army service. Bravery on steroids I'd say...

Have you not watched him for a decade with your own eyes? Poch should have put those boxing gloves on him years ago and toughened him up. The most aggressive thing he's ever done is trip up Andre Gomes. He's been a massive part of this soft underbelly in our club. It's gradually changing, but Sonny won't make the transition.

I've loved the other aspects of his playing style but nobody can surely defend his lack of aggression. It's like his defensive contribution. It's just not where it needs to be, and has never changed over 5 or 6 managers. They can't get breakthroughs with him.

I wonder if the way he was coached by his dad as kid has killed the physical side of his game. We know his dad was a disciplinarian
I can’t work out of he lacks the bravery needed for the game now or he is injured and won’t say or do something about it
The worry is his first touch has never been good despite what people will claim and his game is all about separation to get that amazing shot off
I think we’re asking way too much of him at this point of his career and his current physical state

I think your last point is key though. 32 year olds aren't designed for 11 games in 36 days.

Last time he had a week off I thought I saw a better Sonny. I didn't say great, but better. I'm hoping we get him recharged in Feb. By March, we might have guys like Solanke, Odobert and Johnson back to share the workload.

Maybe
But his technical weaknesses won’t have improved

Well his lack of aggression and defensive capabilities, they never will. They've always been flaws.

His first touch was never superb, but his in-flight touches and finishing were in a a different place.

I'm not looking for the total cure as it not possible. Could do with that confidence and composure coming back though.

Start at most a game a week. With a plan to most likely sub him. Other than than use him as a sub.

Exhausted Son is not much better than Werner, and hopefully soon we'll have more options for that left wing role available.
