So, what happened today?

Nice! What are you gonna grow? I did manage to grow some squash, cucumbers and sweet peas a few years ago, but those things practically grow themselves.

Hurling! Haha. Didn't know it was called that! 😂 you do have a hockey league over there though! I know you sometimes have a team in the hockey equivalent of champions league.
Hurling is like hockey but in the air and without the girly pads for protection. It is a bloody mad game. No ice hockey league here at all as far as I know.

So far I have seedlings on the go for lettuce, gherkins, bell peppers, pumpkins, kale and some basil. I have a few garlic plants in pots outside grown from cloves I found in the bottom of the fridge which are doing surprisingly well. I should get a couple of beds of onion, spring onions and carrots planted this weekend. And I have a box seed potatoes just delivered yesterday so I guess they might be next on the hit list. I haven't really a clue what I am doing but live and learn.

Yep just finished a self build after many years chipping away at it, though when I say finished there are a still a hundred things to actually finish. Glad to hear you are over the line. I do remember you talking about it now.

I have about 30 scaffolding planks knocking around so I'm using them to create raised beds at the allotment and at the house. For the ones around the house I'll probably pretty them up later with some sort of timber cladding I think, as they'll look a bit bricky otherwise. I've two beds done at the house which I've partially filled with branches and other green waste at the bottom. A technique similar to Hugelkultur I believe but it is just to save money on topsoil really. I should get them sown over the weekend - onions and carrots in those beds is the plan.

I have some practical reasons for getting into veg growing, including keeping me occupied now the house is done, but as you say the act of doing it is likely to be reward enough. Sounds like you have a bit of experience at this. Maybe we need a thread on veg gowing!
Onions are a good companion for carrots as they can help keep the pesky carrot fly away.

Haha, ok, never heard of it! Aren't you in the UK? There sure is a hockey league there.

Damn, that sounds really nice! Sounds like you have a big space! I fudged up a few things having too shallow pots and watering some things either too much or too little. Gonna have to try again once the whether gets a little bit warmer.

Never heard of hurling? Well, you are in for a treat then. Here are the highlights from last year's final.
I grew up in the shadow of this stadium in Dublin (actually the old Croke Park, not this exact one). Incidentally, I don't let my kids play this sport. Too fudging dangerous. You need to grow up with a hurl in your hand and learn how to protect yourself properly, or you will get hurt a lot. It is not something you pick up later in life.

I do have a good bit of room out front of the house. I think I might get 6 or 7 beds down each side. Anyway I'll probably post about how it is going in the gardens thread or @Glenda's Legs might get upset.

I’ve watched hurling the last two years whilst away in Albufera with the lads
Still dont get it but we tag along as even the pub crowds are massive

That's great. I'll teach you the rules if you want.

The skill these men have is breathtaking. I have a few family members who are/were really good hurlers. One made the county team for a while.

My own boy was in the Dublin U16 football team there last year. He's an absolutely amazing player, but didn't get called for the minors, which is the next age bracket  . That stung him badly. I think he deserved it myself, but even at that young age, there is a huge amount of politics involved in selection.

Holy fudge! Never heard of it! So many weird sports in this world. This looks mental. Haha! I love it! Looks like a violent version of an on ice sport called "bandy" over here in the north. I googled the english word for "bandy" now, and up comes hurling as the irish word, but "bandy" in Welsh! Here from the world cup final of that:

Another one to google is 'Calcio Storico' . This is on my bucket list.

Yesterday was mothers day and we watched "The Great Gatsby" on TV, it took me back to when we took my mum to see it when it was firsted released at a cinema in Leicester Square and had dinner afterwards at Sheekeys. It was the last time my mum went to the cinema.
