Shooting in Denver

These incidents always seem to happen in middle America. You don't often get these kind of shooting sprees in Los Angeles or New York.

I have family who live in America and I love visting the states, but I will never understand their gun culture. Just because it is ingrained in society and they believe they have the right to bare arms doesn't make it right. I mean certain parts America used to think that slavery was a good idea, but they abolished it a long time ago and realised their mistakes. When are they going to realise they are wrong about guns?

Also, not being harsh or anything but what parent takes a 3 month old to a movie theatre to watch TDKR at midnight?

In short, never.

As this is also an election year, you can bet your bottom dollar neither Obama or Mitt Romney will be drawn into the guns debate, they will dodge the question!

The sad answer is never. Any particular person can be convinced of anything as long as they repeat it in their heads long enough. To add to that, the gun lobby is very strong and the constitution is treated as part of Christian religious canon, despite the fact that there are amendments to the bill of rights - like abolishing slavery as you mentioned - that should allow us to re-evaluate laws.
But every time a mass shooting occurs, the gun conversation does not happen and it's only a matter of months before the next incident.

At the very least, there's too many loopholes allowing people to buy guns from gun shows without any ID or background checks. It really can be too easy to obtain one, but loads of people are paranoid of the government trying to take their guns away so politically, it's not going to happen.

Finally, if those 9gag rumors are true, I hope they treat anyone that gave "advice" to that fudge as an accomplice.

nah just gang shootings

Time for the Government to suck it up and accept they will tinkle a lot of people off and ban guns. Who cares what these macarons think? When you can't go to a movie without coming home in a body bag, something is seriously wrong.

Precisely right. Nothing is going to change. It's funny, the conservatives in this country have already gone and attacked Obama throughout his presidency as being anti-gun. Funny thing is that he's repealed more anti-gun legislation in his time in office than Bush did.

Strange. Comic book of Dark Knight Returns, shooting at a cinema

they would save so many lives if they banned guns. even if they save 1 life a year from doing just that it would all be worth it.

Isn't there a cooling off period of a few days when you buy a gun from a gun shop/K-Mart?

Like you said though, there are so many other avenues from which people can obtain guns from.

Has a president ever tried to take on the NRA for example or try to change the gun laws?

One of the bad things about democracy, a politicians #1 priority is getting re-elected. In fact, it's one of the reasons I quite like having a non-elected governement house in the UK, they can debate issues that elected politicians are afraid to touch

Wouldn't get this brick in Toronto, fo sho

Actually, it's happening more and more up here. Not so much the random citizen going on a shooting spree, but people opening fire in public places. A month or so ago, a couple of people we killed in the biggest mall here, right downtown. The another night, 2 innocent people were killed at a block party.

Sadly, the guns are making their way up to the gangs here. Thankfully, the Canadian government doesn't have the same stance.

The documentary Bowling For Columbine is interesting as it shows the difference between America and Canada. Michael Moore crosses the river from Detroit to Canada where many people don't even look their doors at night. Amazing that two countries next door to each other could have such a difference in culture!

Yep, though it's only half true - I certainly wouldn't leave my doors unlocked in Toronto. There's plenty of psychos here, just as there are in the States. I think the obvious difference is accessibility to guns and not worshipping a document made so long ago it's barely even relevant anymore.

The document itself is highly relevant, and in my opinion, the greatest piece of governance doctrine the world has ever seen. That said, the 2nd amendment is certainly outdated. Just to qualify the remark :).
