Set-Piece - Shooting Specialist

Papercut

Jermaine Jenas
I honestly think one would make a World of difference to our results?

We get corners, we get brick loads of free-kicks and we get shooting opporunities from outside the 18 - however we don't have anyone to take advantage?

We've always been poor at corner taking
We have Kaboul as one of our main free kick takers
We have Modders who occasionally scores the wonder goal from outside the area

But we just don't have that one player that can be a threat continuously!

Maybe Beckham could have made a difference but he's very old and unrealistic now. We do need someone who can fit into the positions that are still uncertain (arguabally right wing or centre forward) who has a wand of a foot.

Hudds has the potential but not seen the finished product yet - I use Hudds as an example because Tugay (formerly of Blackburn) also played in a similar role and wasn't the fastest player but had a great footballing brain and foot!

How often have we won a free kick and seen Kaboul come up for it? F*ck me, BAE's attempt was a lovely surprise!!!

We have the players to finish off corners but don't have the players to take them IMO

Long shots?? Oh lord... We've needed someone to do that since the days when the likes of Wolves would shut up shop (park the bus) and we'd struggle to waltz pass them.

We do buy set piece takers.

Bale scored some beautiful goals for southampton.

They just forget how to take them.

We don't practise them.
We don't score them.

Bale should take corners.
Vdv should take right footed frees.
Bae should take left footed frees.

Kaboul should stay the fudge away.

VDV used to be excellent at them and Bale had a reputation for good ones at Southampton. For the most part, their set pieces since joining the club, both direct and indirect, have been poor.

Bale was a genius when it came to free-kicks. VdV likewise. Modric was the chief set-piece expert for Dinamo, back in the day. We buy some really good dead-ball specialists. But they turn to brick within weeks of them arriving at the club. Probably lack of training, or focus on set-pieces. I mean, look at United's first goal; you had players running diagonally to draw defenders away, players running parallel to confuse the covering players near the spot, and a player blocking friedel to ensure his non-interference. Therefore, it's no great surprise that huge hole opened up in the center of defence for Rooney to nod it in without even having to jump. We do NONE of those things, because we never practise them in training. Whose fault is that?

Modric is absolutely dire at set pieces, he never has enough pace on his delivery. Look at Uniteds first goal, when have we ever whipped in a corner like that? And don't even get me started on the awfulness that is Kaboul taking free kicks..jesus!

Our best bet is probably to let Bale take most free kicks, he is the only one who can hit the target and have som pace on the ball. VDV's free kicks never trouble the keepers 'cause there is absolutely zero power in them.

Looking at our options currently I'd have BAE taking corners and free kicks.....

good idea, he at least hit the damn bar, which is more than our set-piece 'experts' have managed to do all season.

I'll tell you what we should do, though; we should buy that russian fella, what's his name? Pavlyuchenko? Yeah, that guy. I heard he scored a mean free-kick against Rubin Kazan earlier in the season....;)

It's interesting that BAE has said that he has stayed behind to practise free kicks.

Which suggest that he doesn't get much time during formal training to have a go. We are mugs if we do not practice free kicks and corners. and if we are doing then we need some new coaches/new ideas. I'd be interested to know what eprcentage of goals in the Prenmiership are scored from open play and what percentage are not.

We could buy Seb Larsson who is one of the best set piece specialists in the league at the moment and we'd turn him into someone who can't get the ball past the first man.

VDV used to be excellent at them and Bale had a reputation for good ones at Southampton. For the most part, their set pieces since joining the club, both direct and indirect, have been poor.

That is what happens if you dont practice them. Same with corners.

100% agree. Great Analysis. Dubaispur should be in charge of corners and freekicks

I refuse to believe that we don't practise set pieces. It's is absolutely absurd to think any professional football team does not prepare in this manner.
