Ryan Nelsen

deal done, just seen the breaking news on SSN

welcome to Spurs Bryan

Which is fair enough, and broadly he has a good eye on experienced players.

Im referring more to the hyperbole around how Redknapp ruined Pompey and is doing the same here. Not a chance.

One thing that delights me about the moves this window is the clear signal of strategy.

It is obvious with these short deals, with the loans going out, with the bid for Remy... That we are looking to make room for some talent coming in and these guys are here simply to tide us over.

Ive wanted to see a plan in place for a long time, and this is the first Ive seen

yes, but for how many transfer windows with redknapp in charge is this going to be the case?

how long are we going to sign old gimps in preparation for the next window?

Reading that the Blackburn Fans have to say and they are gutted he has gone. Saying he is a real leader, a Gentleman who gives his all and one of the best players they have ever had. They seem to think there was some falling out with Kean or the Venkys and that is why he was allowed to go.

Im a bit shocked at this transfer, But ill give him a chance. he is used to backs to the Wall kind of defending so he might impress.

What on earth gives you the impression Redknapp is in charge?

This is Levys show, always has been.

Levy has his MO, Young, Talent, Potential, Dont lose money. Whenever someone ticks these boxes we get them in.

Redknapp has his, Cheap, Reliable, Known quantity. Whenever we cant get what Levy wants we fall back to this to keep the show on the road.

Things are definitely working to a tipping point in the summer though, exciting times IMO

Blackburn are a mess currently. They have players who can't play due to clauses in their contracts giving them automatic extensions.

He's out with a long term injury apparently - i.e. finished with us

Essentially we got 1 year from him out of 2 worth of wages. And that is exactly the kind of risk associated with 35 year olds

Raises a good point, where is best to find out contract information on players?

If Gallas is out of contract this summer, who else is?

Bentley? Gomes? Jenas?

Friedal, Gallas, Parker...all over 30 when we signed them, not been let down by one.

Gets my vote. Having older heads can only be good for the younger crop we have coming through.

Been out of the loop for a few days but how the fudge anyone can complain about Saha and Nelsen in and Pav out is beyond me.

Pav is utter toss and Saha is class when he isn't injured, definitely worth a punt on a free considering Ade is not our player.

We have a weak CB selection because of injuries, and Nelsen is an experienced and decent player who could be put in the team if needed and would do a professional job. His contract is 6 months with the option to extend it. How can people complain? It is a prudent short-term deal to insure against simultaneous injuries to King, Gallas and one/two of Dawson, Kaboul and Bassong (ed: didn't even realise he had gone to Wolves!), which has already happened this season and left us looking extremely thin - Jake Livermore has played at CB for us.

Anyone comparing Harry's tenure at Pompey to his time here in a negative light is a clown... We have Levy at the helm and he will not mess about with the financial side of things. Both of these transfers were free and are probably not even worth ?ú5m in wages over the 2 years of their combined contracts.

Excellent signings bearing in mind they are both free, there is no-one available, we need them to be able to settle quickly, and there is a massive chance we will be in the CL next year and thus much more able to compete for the hottest properties at CB and up front, at a time where clubs and players will actually be wanting to do business. Some people need to get a fudging grip...

Going by TransferMarkt:

2012: Gomes, Cudicini, Saha, Adebayor, King
2013: Gallas, Friedel, Assou-Ekotto, Kranjcar, Dos Santos, Jenas, Naughton, Caulker
2014: Kaboul, Lennon. VDV, Defoe, Bentley, Bassong, Corluka
2015: Dawson, Pienaar, Bale, Huddlestone, Parker, Rose
2016: Walker, Modric, Sandro, Livermore

May have a scout around at lunchtime. Could be quite revealing.

I suspect by the time we discount loans (as not returning) and contract potentially not being renewed we could see room for 5 or so players to come in and really improve the squad.

For example, this summer Nelsen leaves, Bassong doesnt return and Gallas doesnt geta new contract - we are left with King, Dawson, Kaboul.

Caulker could come in and stand a real chance of breaking through, and there is room for someone like the much talked about Vertoghen (sp).

Also, Gallas, Nelsen/Bassong off of the wage bill leaves us a lot of lee way to pay good money to the new guy (on the basis Caulker isnt raking it in)

Equally RB - Corluka will be a much bigger earner than Naughton. Corluka off, Naughton back to cover Walker. IMO the squad is better off and there is money made available in the wage bill for new buys/contracts

Cheers, looks like Gomes will be off, and the 2013 lot will be available at knock down prices

I'm expecting new contracts for Benny, Caulker and Naughton by the end of the season. King should get another year. Some of them might have extension clauses.

One thing about Nelsen:

Back when he was a Blackburn regular he was a very confident and vocal defender.

Regarding the fact that Dawson and Kaboul always play best alongside King, Nelsen in his own right may contribute to making both of them better players when fielded alongside him.

Also I remember him as very useful at set-pieces.

Think we have an option on Gomes' contract to extend it by another 2 years.
