Ryan Mason

Oh boy, saw this had been posted in and thought okay, maybe know people are starting to see what I mean about this guy not being good enough after today's awful display, then the first two posts.... **** me. At least others then came and said he wasn't great.

I mean, it's not just that he wasn't great, but he was downright awful, how many times, especially in the final 30 mins did he give the ball away? This guy is so painfully average, it blows my mind how anyone rates him. He works hard? Great. He's still ****.

I'm really beginning to hate the guy, which I don't want to, I like him, he's a youth o,Ayer, it's not his fault he isn't very good. It's pochs I site ce in playing him, and the fans desire to **** off their own...

I can't wait until he is out of this squad and playing where he belongs. He doesn't offer anything.

He wasn't great, but that is ludicrously harsh.

Grimsby clearly doesn't like him and he is entitled to that opinion.

He will have a problem though as I think Mason will be here to stay now and will be our captain at some point IMO

Great chance that, he should at least have hit the target, even if it was with his wrong foot.

That pass though - world class! The kind of perfectly weighted pass you'd expect Modric to make. Shame Mason couldn't do better.

I still dont understand how Kane knew Mason was there. He was completely outside his eyeline the whole way through.

Wow. Watch this guy from a decent seta and you see a very different game

I was in a box in the west today and he had. A great game. Full of runs and generally good passes. Looked better than Rooney like for like

56% pass completion rate and only 32 total passes (whoscored.com) is a pretty poor showing from a technical, passing, deep midfielder. Not saying those stats tell the whole story, but I struggle to see how anyone could be accurately described as being great with stats like those.

The thing I like about him is, whether he has a good or bad game, he will work his ar5e off. That should be a minimum we expect from players, but it isn't for most of them. Why I am loving him and Kane right now, they just give their all.

This for me too. He worked really hard and along with Stambouli he did well to stop United playing in the second half. Can't fault his effort and work rate. A bit of inconsistency from a young player breaking through is really to be expected.

Very harsh mate...

I agree that he wasn't good against United, but "awful display". He was a part of that second half team that kept United from having a shot on target in that half. It was a mixed bag for me.

Expect more from him on the ball, even against good teams. Expect him to get on the ball much more and help us keep possession. But nowhere near awful.

Obviously very few people that disagreed with you before will change their minds based on just one game.

Mason/Bentaleb/Kane are young, its often hard to judge with midfielders their impact (can remember many debates on the value of Carrick & Modric early on).

Up and down performances +the occasional bad day at office will be part of their growing/learning path, that's the risk Poch has opted for. No point trying to nitpick every performance with the young players.

He moves the ball quickly. He makes intelligent runs from deep into the box.
When was the last central midfielder we had that could do that?

I was thinking the same thing - how the hell did he know that someone was making that overlap. Even if Mason is yelling 'through' or something - what does he yell to know to put it there?

Modric.

He's filled the Modric-shaped hole in our squad better than anyone in the last 2.5 years, especially the £15m player bought to do that job (Dembele)

I agree, did people really describe him as having been great?!

He looked tired, his passes were often under played, or inaccurate, when it mattered. He ballooned our best chance, of the game, over the bar. He seemed to let a lot of play pass him by.

If this was a great game...wow.

He didn't look tired at all. His energy levels was fantastic, never stopped running and putting tackles in.

Couldn't agree more mate

Does anyone have stats for distance run for our midfield? It seemed like he was the one breaking into their box all the time, yet also expected to be defending with Stambouli... so what was Eriksen doing in comparison?

I remember one time in the second half Rooney just ran untracked into our box and Mason let him go, luckily they decided not to pass to the unmarked Rooney... but then again Chiriches didn't track Rooney either and Mason had probably run a million miles already. You can track it down on hoofoot I'm sure if you care. Someone above said Utd didn't have any chances on target in the second half but when you remember both Mata and RVP blazing hopelessly over from close range...

Captain? Crazy talk :)

As for people saying he's young... is he?! He's 23, it's not that young. How many players in the past 10 years have come out at 23, 24 and turned out to be amazing?

We'll see, but honestly, I will be gobsmacked if he's with us by 2016!

People should watch the past 30 mins of man u and see how many times he gave the ball away. I think he gives th ball away so so much in pretty much every game.

Grimsby, what would your first choice 11 be?

I don't think Mason will ever be 'amazing'.... He is a decent player however and currently the best option we have in the squad in the box to box type role that he plays.

I thought against Man Utd he was 'ok'.... He gave the ball away too often, but also got around the pitch really well and won us a decent amount of possession. The missed shot from Kane's pass kind of summed up his day really - incredible desire and workrate to get into the position but capped with a lack of quality at the end.

From my seat in the East Upper I thought that overall Mason was better than both Ericksen and Stambouli on Sunday.

He won't be captain, many good CM/CB players get to that level post 23 (it requires experience/positioning/etc.)

Again, you focus on the negatives (yes a 23 year old in his first PL season lost the ball against an opposition midfield of Carrick/Rooney/Mata .. oh he must be ****)

To get Mason you have to focus on what he and Bentaleb change in Spurs, and it's purely tempo. With Capoue/Dembele/Paulinho/list goes on we play too slowly, we get tons of possession with no threat, eventually lose the ball anyway and often out of position. Mason/Bentaleb recycle the ball very quickly, along with the energy rate, they up the tempo of the team as a whole, allows us to put more pressure on opposition, allows us to use our fitness as an advantage in ater stages of games.

Will he be here in 2016? I don't know, if we could get the next Modric, probably not, Pritchard might replace him as well.

But to say you don't know what he brings ...

But to say you don't know what he brings ...

He keeps the ball moving which is paramount to Pochs style of play

He wins the ball well (hence 6 interceptions) on Sunday

He gets forward very well from a deep position

Generally his passing is good to very good

In Sunday he did miss a lot of passes... But let's be honest the options were poor. Chadli, eriksen and Townsend differed very few options and Mason isn't one who favours a sideways/backwards pass

I was sat in a box in the west and he was everywhere in the pitch in a manner that I've not seena. Spurs player do for some time. It's no coincidence that we look a better side with him in it as he works hard and plays quick football

If we sign a better player (Cabaye maybe) I can see him losing his place but not against any of the current crop .

Pritchard was mentioned by raziel whoever he plays further toward (as did Mason when he started)

Pritchard for me will be a viable alternative to Eriksen as they play very similar

I'd love to see Mason play with a pacey winger regularly... I think his passes to a quick winger could give us a real alternative option. By the way I don't me at Lennon esque their I mean one who scores from his pace like Robben used too
