Ron Robson - New Director Appointed

Why is the club always "Delighted" whenever they make a new appointment at the club? It's like they just plucked that adjective from the dictionary and want to flog it to death

It is standard corporate-speak. Chief executives are always "excited" about the new double-glazing in the lobby, or the £15-a-year revenue to be generated through a joint venture with The Gorgonzola Sock company.

As the name suggests, a non-executive director (NED) does not hold any executive responsibility, so Robson won't have a lot of impact.

A NED is usually there to keep the executive directors in line - fat chance of this, usually, as the Old Boys Network typically applies - and is often appointed because of his or her connections.

In this case, his "connection" is with that of Piedmont, Joe Lewis's investment vehicle. As a previous poster noted, Lewis had a go at taking over Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) and although he did not succeed, he built up enough of a stake to get some representation on the M&B board; Robson is deputy chairman of M&B (a non-executive role).

It's probably more than just that in this case. A non exec is also often appointed because he brings with him experience, or a specific set of skills, that others on the board might not have to any great degree.

Precisely this, so if you wanted someone with lots of experience of "leisure, real estate and logistics sectors" because you are planning a major stadium/retail/leisure/real estate/logistics blah blah then he is a good man to have on board for a while.
