Rodrigo Bentancur

Carrick made his england debut in 2001, we didn't buy him till 2004. He didn't break through with us.
IIRC he was highly rated and in the PL with West Ham doing well. But then spent a season in the Championship with them before joining us.

Perhaps break through is the wrong word. But playing consistently at a high level and in that deepest role imo happened when he joined us. That's when he showed what a wonderful "6"he could be. Impossible to know for sure, but I doubt he was ready for that kind of role at 19/20.

I presume Spurs are tracking all the top semi-defensive-midfielders around e.g. Joao Gomes, Ederson, the young Swede at Frankfurt called Hugo Larsson etc.
I say semi-defensive because I think Ange doesn't want a pure destroyer, he wants someone that can also play a bit.

PS - nobody will play all 60 games each year if we do really well, so we need to consider it an addition to the SQUAD, not just one first teamer that will always be there

PPS - When is the ACN, when Biss and Sarr disappear for a while together?
Any random Saturday?

Ha. I'll answer my own question. The ACN25 is from 21Dec25 to 18Jan26 so that will be the real crunch point of the busiest part of the season when we lose both Biss and Sarr for several weeks (plus malaria / injury) so there is a high chance Biss will be sold to mitigate that.

And his historical misdemeanours with the laughing gas

Thought Bentancur was very good tonight. Personally I think he’s just right to rotate with Gray if and when we ease him into midfield.
One of his better games as a 6 for us. Have been hoping that he'd grow into that role, then losing some of that hope. But this was an encouraging performance.

In form and in flow Bentancur is a wonderful player. Hope we get more of that this season.

I believe if he can stay injury free and not get stupid suspensions we will see him turn into a VERY good player for us. He has the ability to do so.

People forget what a monster he was in Conte's awful 2 man midfield.

Hopefully he gets back to speed now (post injury) and close to what he was then.

Particularly brick today.

"Bents might as well stay on because he's suspended for Thursday, he was probably more useless than Bissouma in the first half but because he's a macaron who took himself out of the equation for the important game, let's not sub him" is a conversation that probably happened within our coaching staff at half time today. Absurd situation, no excuses left.

I thought he was pretty awful yesterday, but I think he's one of the first players that need to be replaced. He and Bissouma just don't control matches consistently and is a large part of why our midfield is so poor. They can't pass well enough, they don't turn (I think they can, but they choose not to), they sometimes win the ball back but aren't really dominant in pressing (may be more of a manager/team issue than individual problem). The biggest problem for me is our lack of incisive, accurate passing. Bentancur was just so careless with his passes and not on the same wavelength as our other players. If we're simply giving the ball away for free, it compounds all our other problems.

He was indeed poor yesterday, but he has shown previously how good he is, even in more trying circumstances (e.g. in a two-man Conte midfield set-up often up against 3 or even 4 midfielders of the opposition).

He to my mind is suffering like many of our defenders from the inherent issues with our set-up. We seem to insist on getting the ball forward with quick passes ALL THE TIME, when a period of steady possession would be the preferred option.
Oh well

And this is the reason we need a caretaker manager rather than allowing Ange to finish at the end of May.

I'd love to see these players have their heads unscrambled and given a couple of months to show what they can do with the Ange shackles well and truly off.
