Medical research has shown that Sprite is the best thing possible for curing hangovers !!!!

It may sound like stating the obvious, but if you want to lessen the effects of a hangover, drinking Sprite may be the answer.

That is to say, not instead of alcohol but in addition to, as the lemon and lime soft drink has been put forward as an alternative to a black coffee, painkillers, vitamin tablets, or even a Bloody Mary.

Chinese researchers analysing the effects of almost 60 drinks on how we metabolise alcohol found Sprite sped up the process of breaking it down, meaning the effects of a hangover are not so pronounced.

After we drink, our livers release the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) that breaks ethanol into acetaldehyde, which is in turn metabolised by enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) into acetate.

Whereas acetate is largely harmless, acetaldehyde is believed to be the real cause of headaches and nausea associated with hangovers.

Scientists at the Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, publishing their findings in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Food and Function, said Sprite sped up the ALDH process, therefore minimising the effects of hangovers.

Edzard Ernst, emeritus professor of complementary medicine at the University of Exeter, told RSC website Chemistry World: ‘These results are a reminder that herbal and other supplements can have pharmacological activities that both harm and benefit our health.

I always have orange lucozade, the fizzy stuff.

I tried the non fizzy stuff once and almost immediately threw up orange liquid! Nasty! That was one bastard of a hangover!

The worst hangovers are where you cant even have a sip of water without throwing it back up

I've never once been sick whilst hung over but that might explain why they are so bad and last so long, quite literally incurable as pain killers and Berocca's don't even work :(

Oh well, all self inflicted for a good cause

I've known for years that 7Up or Sprite was a great cure.

Back in the early 90s when I was getting smashed I'd always grab a can of 7up and a couple of bacon sandwiches as the railway station cafe. Felt 100% by the time I got to work.

There's one of these studies every 6 months or so that make the papers.

Personally ice cream sets me right for an hour. Enough time to get some food inside me and get my blood sugar level back up.

The funny thing with me is that i don't suffer from hangovers no matter how much i drink BUT my stomach always hurts every time i drink alcohol and i tend to always vomit half way through the night. I just get this annoying pain regardless of the type of alcoholic beverage i drink (except maybe shots) which is why i don't drink much at all.

I had a hangover in June 2012 that was so bad I haven't touched alcohol since. I thought I was dying.

The top comments on that story are of people saying Irn-Bru is the best hangover cure. Might have to give that a try.

Dr. Pepper always helped me when in the library towards the end of my third year, buy a small bottle from the vending machine and sipping away whilst working, did the trick. Orange Gatorade wasn't bad either.

I have always sworn by as much water as I can stomach and a banana before I fall asleep

If I am drinking a lot of cider / beer I will have maybe a pint of water every 3-4 pints
