Rail travel price rise

There's a solution to this problem - buy a car.

They're much more comfortable and they have the added bonus of not needing to hear a bunch of fannies whining about their fare increases ;)

and what if you are going to the football or a night out at the theatre with the missus and want/need a drink to get through and evening watching Tottenham/theatre.

You could hire a Jeremy Clarkson lookalike taxi driver to ferry you about in his Jag? Just don't ask about that stain on the upholstery.

Is it true that a lot of our rail providers are foreign owned, Arriva by the Germans sort of thing? Are we subsidising better rail in someone else's country?

Yeah I think some are, I am sure one is French. Probably like how our energy prices are so high because of foreign ownership. I like capitalism but the are some things that should never have been sold off and the railways are one of them. Years of under funding meant it looked more attractive to sell them off but really if they were funded properly over the years we would not have this problem.

i don't think there is a direct flow from those companies as they don't necessarily hold franchises at home, a lot of european govt's pay massive subsidies to their national operators

Don't even get me started, all my friends live in Brighton and London, each time I go see them it costs a f**king fortune. I work P/T atm so don't really have the funds for this sh!t ](*,)

They ought to hurry the hell up and finish London Bridge as well because part of my match day ritual is to go and get a bison burger from Borough market before walking to Liverpool street, but trains are not going into London Bridge from my way at weekends now apparently.

I get into Waterloo and if there's time I'll walk up to Liverpool Street and stop in for a Wagamamas - bit of calamari then a katsu curry. Love soaking in London a bit, views of the Thames etc.

Now it looks like I won't be able to afford the calamari :(

Same sort of thing mate I love the walk down to Liverpool street with my son, the is one office block with a massive fish tank in the front lobby that he always likes looking at. I used to do the walk with my father but he passed away last year and it brings back nice memories and I also pass on little history lessons to my son without him realising he is doing it.

The train is the worse part of the Tottenham experience.

The Mrs and I just moved back from California.
Now job hunting and deciding where to live
Did the figures last night and we can realistically SAVE around 3.5-5k living in zone 2-4 instead of commuting from St Albans.

TWO Z1-6 cards are roughly the same price as ONE St Albans to all zones season ticket.
I get it will cost more, but almost double? Its madness

Madness is why you'd move back to this country from California!! Most of us are trying to get out!!

I would imagine what shapes peoples vision is that they get much more for their money in terms of homes than they would in London. The flip side of the coin is, as you say you end up incurring high costs of commuting which in turn means you save **** all.

Oh for sure.
I think St Albans is a bit of a special case in that prices are very similar value to London.
Beautiful town, but not worth 5k a year - I can see why Sussex becomes appealing

I know right!!!

But in all seriousness we like universal healthcare, annual leave, employment rights and not ever ****ee having a gun too much.

Add to that all the cultural things London offers and it was just too much to give up and couldn't be replaced by sun and cheaper housing.

And don't even get started on politics....hobby lobby!

Tough to move continent twice in 6months, but when you know, you know.

A mate just moved to Bishops Stortford into a 3 bed house with garden as living in a 2 bed flat in Wimbledon was too expensive. Saving a fair bit overall taking into account the increased travel costs into London.

Even yesterday travelling upto London for the game, its bank holiday sunday, SW4 on the Carnival, its sunny loads more people, my train company puts on a reduced service with shorter length trains than usual, I bet they didnt charge less, absolute shower of clams

You have to weigh up other things like bigger house, garden etc as well. Also depends on your job, I am based in London but a lot of my work is on client site and that can be more or less anywhere.

Also with St Albans isn't it like only a 20 minute journey into central due to really good train links.

Exactly. And St Alb is a bit of a bubble like that.
Poster above mentioned bishop stortford. Lovely place and cheaper.
St Albans, doesn't offer the same value for money.

Yes its 20mins in st panic but crowded as **** and 4k per year per person.

Leave London completely, it's the only answer.

Your salary will drop 20% for a year or so but you'll make it back. You get green space, a far bigger house, etc. And when I want to go to London I just drive in, stay at a hotel and get to leave the next day. The downside is that I don't get to see Spurs as much as I used to, but that might change when my son's old enough to come with me.

I don't know a single person who's left London who regrets it.

Seriously total ****ing cowboys, ripping off the taxpayer to the max

New signalling installed at Ipswich rail station as part of a £25m upgrade has been found to contain faults.

Signal installation overran on the Norwich to London line last weekend disrupting travel for thousands of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex commuters.

Network Rail said a new team had been brought in after finding the faults.

Area director Steve Cassidy apologised for the disruption and inconvenience and said a decision on further work would be made on Friday.

He said: "Passengers suffered as a result of our mistake and I'd like to apologise to all those affected by Tuesday's engineering overrun.

"We have found fault with the original design of the new signalling system.

"A new team has now been brought in to oversee the design of the new system."
Replacing tracks

Further improvement work was planned for this Sunday and a decision will be made on Friday as to what, if any, of the work can proceed, he said.

Network Rail and Abellio Greater Anglia will also carry out a wider review of the entire upgrade programme, which will limit the risk of work overrunning in future.

Ipswich MP Ben Gummer called for resignations after mainline trains were cancelled throughout Monday morning.

Network Rail has been replacing 40-year-old tracks, recabling overhead lines, building sidings and installing new signals
