Putin & Russia

Begs the question why they're still in the air then.

Putin clearly testing our resolve, we're inviting him to march on through Europe by doing nothing.

I agree that we're not doing enough and that for absolute years Russia has got away with anything and everything.

Best we've ever had to offer to counteract Russia is sanctions - but we're so frightened of harming our own GDP's that these never stay in place for long.

If Putin said tomorrow that he was calling back his troops and ending the conflict, would be surprised if within a year economic ties weren't back to normal with everything more or less forgotten about.

But realistically what else can we do? How else can we stop Putin without making ourselves a nuclear bullseye?

Its such a difficult situation which is why Putin's called (almost correctly) that we'll not stand in his way.

Stay in place? I'd be a lot happier if we could actually put real sanctions in place to start with.

Until Gazbank is barred from all transactions in the UK and the EU we are wilfully failing.

Andrew Murray, deputy president of Stop the War alongside Corbyn, condemned the approach, saying: “Keir Starmer’s authoritarian fear of Stop the War demeans him and the Labour party, not us. We have been proved right on Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya where Labour leaders were wrong. We are right in demanding de-escalation in Ukraine too, including immediate Russian troop withdrawal and a halt to Nato expansion.”

Although blaming nato rather than Putin would be spurious, Stop the War are probably correct. Lives could have been saved by nato standing down. Or the west/nato should not have got involved with Ukraine a decade ago, as the seeds of this war were sown then. None of that justifies Putin's actions, however.

It is quite some track record Stop the War have contesting the prevailing thinking. Wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya were all mainstream accepted. In hindsight, none can be considered a success and lost both western lives and far more indigenous lives. As well as wrecked the counties putting them back decades.

Who's right?

The other sad thing is sanctions - both governmental and private companies taking it upon themselves to cease Russian-related activities - could be better targeted at the state and elite, rather than pretty poor Russian people, who tend not to have much regard for putin.

Best way of generating an uprising. They’ve become used to all the trappings of western life. They’re not going to like going without them - nor will they like being persona non grata all over Europe.

There will be a few more sun loungers available in the Canaries this summer.
