Pushing Up The Daisies

I know you have briefly written about bad experiences you suffered as a child growing up at the hands of a Catholic institution. Some terrible things have come from Catholicism, like all big organisations, sadly it has not been immune. I am so sorry for those who have suffered in the name of the religion. It has been poorly led in the past and children abused by its priests or adherents coming up with their own self serving interpretations of the biblical teachings.

For all of that though, Pope Francis was trying to bring about change. May be too late for some but you have to start somewhere. He was not afraid to address taboo subjects and to provide good, calm leadership in a time when it has definitely been needed. At the moment in particular, where it seems many world leaders are self serving he was in my opinion inspirational and more true to the Christian teachings than many of his predecessors; but like any human he was not perfect. For me, his loss is massive; the world has lost yet another progressive leader.

RIP Francis and thank you for your service.
In fairness I don't think I really suffered anything bad, apart from the pain of having to go to Mass every week (I think @Danishfurniturelover has implied more bad experiences with a catholic upbringing). I went to catholic schools where the education standards were good (part from the one anecdote I mentioned about contraceptive advice :) ). In more recent years I just came to question firstly the inequalities in the teachings of the church which I had long felt uncomfortable with, and then more broadly the whole concept of there even being a GHod in the first place.

I agree that Pope Francis seemed to be more progressive and was trying to introduce change whilst facing a lot of pushback.
It will be interesting to see whether his successor is one who follows in his path, or is more regressive to older values.

If he represents leadership he would have banished a cardinal here in Oz who was found guilty of abusing 2 boys & was sent to prison. One of those boys took his own life before giving his evidence. When he was released he was welcomed back to the Vatican with open arms. f you call that progressive leadership I will pass thanks

Tim Minchin wrote a song about him

He might have been more progressive but if the is a Hell like they preach. He will be burning in it.

The amount of evil his organisation has put out into the world is matched and bettered only by some of the other religions.

Seemingly the majority of the college of cardinals is cardinals that he placed there. So it's likely they'd have a similar outlook as he did meaning the next pope will more than likely continue along the same path.

When I had my Christmas reunion with old school mates none of the 6 of us were still practising Catholics and only 2 had their kids go to catholic schools. Following really fallen away in the Irish community.
Yup, Catholic church is barely surviving in Ireland at this stage. They have to combine parishes to have numbers for mass. Priest numbers are dropping too.

I'm amazed Trump hasn't got involved in picking a new Pope. He always claims to be so religious. He could pardon a convicted child molester catholic priest and insist he should be the next Pope. A MAGA friendly Pope.
