Gordon Brown refused to leave Downing Street after an election iirc.
 
Brexit has a lot to answer for. Not only making your average Brit poorer, it’s delivered Boris into no. 10 with a massive majority.

If you believe in our democratic system he should be allowed to serve his term. This is what was voted for. The Tory’s are only being strategic - trying to impose a change now before the next election.

To think we used to be a highly respected global nation, seen as stable, dependable and honourable. Now the world is seeing what is below the posh facades. Sad thing is the sorry state of affairs - from Brexit onwards to this very pathetic coup - is the Tory party wrangling and imposing its internal disputes onto public. And the nation suffers while the rich stay in power.

To be fair the only people who said they respected Britain were the ones getting handouts in foreign aid. The rest have not care about us for a long time.

The end of the second world war and the Commonwealth countries going independent was when Britain stopped being a global relevance.

Germany has struggled to put together a government recently, France has a President you can't control his government and big cost of living crisis with a pension time bomb that looks horrific.

The Italians are pretty much ungovernable.

Britain is brick and Johnson is a tw*t. Despite supporting brexit which I still do I never even considered voting for him.

For sure, everyone knows we're like everyone else behind the pretenses. But internationally we were respected for our traditions, our dependable legal system, and for being open to business. Some of that has changed. Companies have moved into the EU. We are not the trusted partner we once were reneging on international laws, and our image for making pragmatic economic decisions has been shattered. How could the UK impose self-harm onto itself and not be able to see the economic realities of brexit? The world was aghast.

Mate you really are quite obsessed with the EU. Far more then me on the other side. The city which was meant to lose jobs now has more jobs in finance then before brexit.

While sure some have left. A lot of companies have had trouble getting staff to relocate and even the Americans have said trying to take jobs from the city will actually harm EU banking.

Agree with selling off businesses though, why they are still debating selling off that Welsh semi conductor business is beyond me. But that is the Tories for you. Back handers and self interest and screw the country.

Our legal system was screwed when Bliar brought in the human rights act so his wife and her friends could get rich with ever more court cases.
 
At least it’s entertaining. One thing you can’t criticise Bozo for is being dull! He delivers comedy and makes politics far more interesting.

Incredible really. 7 (?) resignations already this morning.
The Attorney General on tv and radio touting for the PM's job already whilst not resigning.
Nadhim Zawahi taking a promotion and now issuing a public letter calling for Boris to resign.
Newly appointed Education Secretary resigning.
Radio silence apparently from Downing Street - ah - he's going! He's agreed to stand down! Hallelujah.

Edit : staying on until October.
Some saying this morning that he shouldn't even stay during a leadership election and someone else should be 'caretaker'. This might not be over yet.

Shame. I was hoping that Johnson would go full Raoul Moat and that Michael Fabricant would rock up to a besieged Downing St with some beers and chicken.
 
Listening to interviews with incumbent and former Ministers this morning, it shows what a motley crew this government has been. Brexit took out the normal safe hands, and we were left with some limited Ministers who would never normally get off the back benches.

It is slightly odd that these Turkeys have now twisted the knife and got Boris to go - voting for Xmas. Boris gave them their jobs. How much is the rest of the Tory party establishment behind this drive to move Boris on? Or just a greed for individual power and self preservation at the next election?

The problems won’t disappear with Boris however. We’ll still have this charade of pro-Brexit representation. Still have the inherent problems with it to deal with. A faltering economy. Negotiations with the EU etc.

The long game is this: the UK will need to rejoin the single market. It just makes sense and fixes a lot of the issues. When campaigning for Brexit many leavers saw us within the single market but leaving the EU. Call it the Norway model if you wish.

The reason we didn’t get this form or exit initially, was the realisation that it was worse than staying in the EU. Like being in the EU without having any control. But pragmatically it makes a lot of sense. Technically outside the EU, but open to trade freely and work closely with the EU. It fixes most NI issues and allows our businesses to sell into Europe without red tape. The sooner we can address this the sooner we fix the roots of many of our problems. A 4% drop in national GDP is not something anyone can fix unless we rejoin the single market. The lost tax revenue is not being recouped elsewhere and the dream scenario of us suddenly selling more to non-eu nations was always pie in the sky.

How the next incumbent deals with this fundamental problem will likely define them too.

Erm, nope.
He is the Prime Minister. He is not a President.
You get to be Prime Minister of the House of Commons if you can command a majority in parliament. To do so requires the confidence of your party (or at least of numerous MPs).
Having 50 members of Government resign is not an indication of support. It is therefore right that the Conservative party look for a leader and give them the opportunity to command a majority.

Re servicing term. That applies to MPs. Nothing more.
 
I'll support any candidate who promises their first act as PM will be to redecorate Downing Street - DIY and with B&Q own brand paint from their own funds.
