Pedro Porro

Not only an assist for our goal but also spared Romero’s blushes by blocking Wilson’s shot just after he came on.

Whose next?

Hopefully Romero picks up another suspension soon so he can get a rest (only half joking).

Solanke will probably have to start again against Frankfurt and I'm not betting against him starting against City too. That would be 4 starts in quick succession after essentially half a season out.

Hopefully careful and precaution with VdV at least.

Part of my frustration is that even though the options aren't as good as the first choice players we've seen drops in quality for Kudus and Porro before they got injured. Meaning that even though the options aren't as good as them the actual drop in quality wouldn't be that big with some rotation earlier on. And he's had options, for Kudus, Porro, Bentancur.

I maintain that Frank seems desperate. A couple more injuries like this could take our season from derailed to dumpster fire.

It's interesting that Frank said that his half time substitution was physical implying that Porro was playing laboured. He then went on to say that Spence had more running in his legs for the second half. We obviously had Udogie on the bench and the comeback trail.

Then we find out that Porro wasn't indeed on red zone protection. He's out for a month with a hamstring. Now I'm not sure whether the player wasn't being totally honest or whether the hamstring just tightened up after the player came off. It is implied though that Frank wasn't exactly telling the truth in his post match presser. It probably was an injury induced sub.

I'm sure this season's priority will become about the PL at some stage. I think you were already there with the Solanke vs Tel CL squad decision last week. I agree that the drop in quality when players are in the red zone is pretty visible. Not sure whether that is just before injury as you say. We've seen it with Porro before where his game has dropped off but he's never had an injury like right now. Saying that, he's come off the back off 2 very intense seasons punctuated with about 15 international games. Like Harry and Hojbjerg before him, that domestic and international schedule builds especially when you're never subbed at the end of games.

If there is any upside, we get to see Spence as a RB. We saw a decent LB performance from VDV if Udogie doesn't stand up to the task and we know Danso has been playing well. I think we should be able to put out pretty decent defences which in some ways might be more balanced.

Obviously impossible to know what is known about these things behind the scenes.

Just to be clear I'm not saying being in the red zone and having a drop in performance will be just before an injury. To me there's likely a probabilistic risk playing in the red zone, if a player gets injured or not can't be predicted. But do it enough times with enough players and injuries will result.

Yeah, good news is that we have some options. My thinking would be that it leaves us less balanced. More defensive capability perhaps, but less in terms of passing and crossing (our primary way of creating chances in open play it seems). We're already short in those areas overall with Porro on the pitch so I think this leaves us less balanced.

Yeah, it's a good point about the passing and distribution. Frank has also had some stick for only playing down the channels. Now when you have Spence and Udogie either side, I'm guessing channel play will be prevalent. I'd be intrigued to know whether he adopts the other option where the full back can diagonally run from the wide area towards the 6 yards box like we used to see with Doherty and others. Some of that under Ange as well. It's probably the wrong 4 league games to be doing much of that though.
