Tottenham's current policy of sending good young players (and players possibly past their sell by date) out on loan to Premiership and lower division clubs has certainly bourne fruit with the likes of Walker at right back and (although judgement is still out) Livermore - it also has a major downside if you look at what was on the bench for Monday's game at Liverpool. If we are to be serious title contenders Cudicini, Bongani, Nelsen, Rose, Luongo, Lancaster, Saha are not players (with the exception maybe of Cudicini and Saha) who could be called upon to turn a game had things gone belly up - whereas with players currently out on loan such as Caulker, Naughton, Bassong, Jenas, Corluka, Pienaar, Adam Smith, Harry Kane and Townsend there is a nucleus of premiership experience and up and coming talent. It is worrying that with so many injuries to the 1st team squad we no longer have experienced reserves to call into the team and certainly on Monday we had a bench made up of total strangers to the first team - and it showed!!
 
It didn't look great admittedly but United, Liverpool and Arsenal have had the same scenario many times over the last few years. We did have VDV, Lennon, Defoe, Sandro, Gallas, Kaboul, Huddlestone and GDS all out. With half of them expected to be fit a few days before the game. Give it a week or two and the bench and first XI will look a lot stronger. The players you mentioned out on loan especially Caulker and Naughton would be wasted on our bench. And the more senior players want to be playing regular football, which you can't really argue with.
 
I actually quite liked our bench. Surprised Luongo didn't get a token 25 second cameo to run around a bit, the club do seem to rate him highly.
 
Harry will only use certain players off the bench anyway, the rest are just there in case of injuries.

serious contradiction fears
 
I appreciate the point, but I'd still rather we sent our youngsters out on loan to gain valuable experience as opposed to letting them rot on the bench. We made that mistake with the likes of Taarabt and Prince-Boateng (Although the fact that they were headcases may have more to do with why they didn't succeed at Spurs), and I'm happy to see that we're not doing with Caulker and Naughton.
 
The bench looked weak however players like Kane, Mason, Bostock, Smith, Townsend, Naughton arent much different to what was on the bench. Players like Bassong and Corluka were from all accounts pretty demoralised from not ever playing that frankly it probably wouldnt have been much benefit bringing them on so loaning them out made sense. The one which I would have liked to have on the bench would have been Pienaar or perhaps Townsend as I think we're short in wide areas when we get an injury or two.
 
Desperate times call for desperate measures. The fact that three or four players went up to liverpool and did not play makes me think they thought they would be fit.

Those players added to the bench make it a much more powerful prospect.


The players out on loan are ones that would not have played much therefore they have either been sent off to:

1. Gain First team experience
2. With an option to buy
3. With the Intention of placing them in the shop window.

I trust Levy and Harry's judgement on this.

Caulker, Naughton, Adam Smith and Harry Kane are all England under 19 internationals which in the 60/70's would have guaranteed them a first team place at Tottenham
 
At least they've learned to bring some kids along and not have two goal keepers on the bench.

Would any of those players have made a difference though? Pienaar for Kranjcar?
 
to be fair though, we did have Khumalo on the bench. That guy could probably have beaten Liverpool on his own. Kevin Bond was being merciful by not bringing him on

Caulker, Naughton have some premiership experience - all gained THIS SEASON. Why? BECAUSE they have been loaned out.

Smith and Kane have NO REAL PREM EXPERIENCE. Kane a little in Europe, that it. They have a few season of lower 1st team football. Why? BEACUSE they were loaned out.

Cant get first team experience without playing in a first team - and they wernt going to make ours, so they were loaned, correctly.

In the 60s/70s they wouldnt have made the bench, because there wasnt one. Things change in 40-50 years.

have to say such abundance of youth on the bench is refreshing, especially so these days,
